Default DL 4 Dragons of Desolation; IC; Chapter 4

Makeshift Refugee camp in the 'Hopeful Vale' somewhere in the Kharolis Mountains south of Pax Tharkas to the Mountain supposedly housing the Dwarven Kingdom of Thorbardin, Late Afternoon of Early Morning of 17 Hiddumont thru Early Afternoon of 22 Hiddumont (October), 351 AC

Armed with a map (and a magical crown that could take over someone's body to provide a living guide...though the companions WISELY didn't tell anyone about that); the companions rounded up the approximately 800 souls in the 'Hopeful Vale' and started off towards the legendary Dwarven Kingdom of Thorbardin. The fact that cold winds and early light snowfall had begun helped cease the grumblings of those who wanted to stay in their new found camp; as did the fact that patrols from the Red Wing of the Dragon Army had been encountered several times in the past few days.....

Though the distance to travel was only a little over 50 miles; the fact that it was done in the rocky, cold, high passes of the Kharolis Mountains and by families of Refugees of whom very few had any experience of moving in terrain like this ensured that the trip took 5 days. During that time, each of the companions has some time to reflect on recent happenings....

Rough the Ranger asks for Maxavel's help in reading the Disks of Mishakal. They in turn ask the Disks owner; Elistan; who graciously agrees. Rough is chagrined to learn that he CAN in fact read the magical artifacts; with the words magically 'speaking' to him in his mind as his eyes go over them. Maxavel rediscovers that when she reads the words, they are in her native Ergothic; while Elistan sees them as words in Common; and the other new Clerics of good each in their own language; Plainsman, Solamnic, etc.

The veteran Ranger and the Cleric of Mishakal feel their faith renewed by the words on the Disks and each learns a little something of the 21 total True Gods of Krynn....though the information on the Gods of Evil and Neutrality is scant*....

Gerald Doorne, thru conversations with Sir Gavin Uth Kallin, Knight of the Sword and the young Paladin Sir Garth Blackwood, Knight of the Crown; that Solamnia is at war with elements of the Dragon Army. Some of the prisoners taken revealed as much, though their knowledge of activity taking place so far away was minimal at best. The two Knights both seem quite determined to find a way to travel North and West, thru the now deserted Elven lands of Qualinest, to the coast and from their try to find a ship to take them to Solamnia to learn of the situation and if necessary, to join the struggle to defend their homeland. Garth is distraught at the prospect of leaving his quest to accompany the Dwarf Thorn Stoneshield to Thorbardin, but also agonizes with worry about his family in Solamnia. Sir Gavin comes up with a solution....

He asks if Squire Gerald will take up the quest in Garth's stead and the veteran warrior readily agrees to do so. The Knight of the Sword then proceeds to knight Gerald Doorne as a Knight of the Crown and the fighter is moved by the unexpected act and readily agrees to swear by the Oath ('My honor is my life') and to follow the dictates of the Measure to the best of his abilities. The other two Solamnic Knights then proceed to leave on their own quest after Garth says some solemn farewells to the others, especially Thorn. Gerald falls in with the group, doing his best to learn about these 5 adventurers who were already talked about as Heroes by most of the Refugees and to fit in....

Thorn Stoneshield, sorry to see his young Paladin friend depart, but fully understanding the desire to return home to defend it from the terrible forces of the Dragon Army. He was worried about his homeland of Kaolyn in the Garnet Mountains as well; seeing as how they fell right next to Solamnia; but he knew his kinsmen could fall back into the mountains and in there, even Dragons would be easy to outmaneuver; so they could hold for a long, long time indeed. Instead, his thoughts turned to what would he say to his long-lost fellow Dwarves of Thorbardin to try and complete his mission of re-opening trade between the Dwarven Kingdoms that hadn't communicated in well over 3 centuries....

Valentheran and Gilthanas felt more and more singled out as the only two elves in the group; sometimes in a harmless way by answering curious children's questions; sometimes in a more worrying way by getting hard looks from people who clearly regarded them as 'outsiders'. Still, most of those around them were clearly in awe of them; along with their fellow companions; and the two were growing as close as they had been since they were young. They spent time studying each others spellbooks; though they were not able to learn each others' spells as much as they would have liked; and in discussing the unwelcome thought (to forest-dwelling elves anyway) of traveling deep underground in a Dwarven Kingdom; if they actually found it.....

On the morning of the 5th day of traveling, the massive group of refugees finds themselves in a clearing that leads some 500 yards to the sheer cliff face of a massive mountain that towers far, far above them and stretches more than a mile in width. It is clear that according to the map, THIS is the Mountain that the Kingdom of Thorbardin is built in. Upon closer examination, a narrow 'stairway' of steps has been cut into the side of the cliff and leads up about 100 feet to a narrow ramp that stretches across the width of the mountain....

Having felt the outsider vibe so strongly from the refugees, Vale knows that it's about to get even worse in the fabled home of the dwarves. He pulls Gilthanis aside and whispers a few words of caution, warning his friend to lay low and hold his temper if the dwarves get insulting.

    Default Rough

Upon sitting down to read the disk, expecting to need much more help, he is surprised to see the letters "come alive" for him. He pores over the information of Hubbakuk and is several paragraphs in before looking up as if puzzled. "huh..." and continues reading, now out loud for everyone present. It is almost meditative for him. He then hands off the discs to Max. He spends the next few days before their journey going over them all for himself as well, but this first time, with the supposed new leaders of the various faiths reading from the disc of their patron gods is an experience that he will remember for the rest of his days.

Rough will spend the rest of his time in the company of his companions, finding less comfort in other company. Still, he will spend some of the time hunting and foraging, seeing what, if any, damage to the vale has happened since the refugees settled in. He does what he can to gather medicinal herbs and gather food and deadfall for the trip into the mountains, recruiting the elves to accompany him if they'll come.

Once they are on the move, he will take point as he did before, both to take advantage of his knowledge of the local mountains and to keep a little distance from him and the general group they are leading. When the reach the base of the stairs, he will look up grimly and look to Thorn. "I think this might be your time to lead, lad." he says in dwarvian.

    Maxavel

Hopeful, yet tired, Max tries to keep spirits up during the long walk. She speaks of rest and a new home for the refugees, new friends and discoveries for her companions.

Upon reaching the clearing, Max stands in awe of the fabled mountain and the groups final destination. "It's huge! Things are starting to turn our way. Let's have everyone make camp here while we scout ahead."

Max suggests her companions accompany her up the path into the unknown.

    Default Gerald

It was a long 5 days and during the journey Gerald was thinking about his change in circumstances. The time with his mentor Gavin and Garth had helped him to find a new purpose in his life. He would spend the rest of his time on Krynn living up to his knighthood.

Gerald also spent much of his time trying to figure out how he was going to get along the leaders of the group. It was never easy for him to make friends before, and that was with other humans. This group included elves and dwarves!

They eventually arrive at a clearing at the base of a huge cliff. He hears Maxavel's suggestion that they scout ahead, and he moves to stand in front of her. With the other knights departure he feels responsible for the safety of the group, especially the lady Max. "Please, allow me to lead. We don't know what dangers could be up ahead."

Somewhere in the Kharolis Mountains south of Pax Tharkas at the Mountain supposedly housing the Dwarven Kingdom of Thorbardin, Late Morning of 22 Hiddumont (October), 351 AC

As the 800 or so refugees grumbled in the cold mountain air, staring at the massive, flat-sided stone face of the huge mountain in front of them a light snow began to fall and the 'Council of Freedom' agreed with the adventurers scouting out the 'stair-way' built into one side of the mountain's face while the refugees made camp.....

Sir Gerald Doorne led the way; finding the rocky steps tricky and a little difficult to negotiate up the steep mountain wall; especially when they seemed to 'reverse course back up' in a diagonal fashion in the opposite direction he had been climbing, so that his face was now looking out towards the refugees milling about some 100 feet below him or so; but then the steps ended at a ledge that seemed to cross the entire face of the mountain and gave him room to stand on 'flat' ground again. He helped Maxavel and the others that followed after him and all were soon wondering at the purpose of the ledge that was clearly cut-into-the-face of the mountain's purpose until sharp-eyed Gilthanas exclaimed in an excited voice; "Over here!"

As the companions moved over to the Elven Warrior-Mage; he showed them the outline of a cleverly hidden 'panel' and some prodding at it opened it up with a cloud of dust and the foul smell of long-trapped air from a little section that seemed to have a mechanical; life-sized hand outstretched from the mountain wall as if to 'shake' someone's hand in greeting. Everyone soon turned to Thorn; but he had never heard or seen anything like it; though his examinations led him to tell his fellows that it was DEFINITELY of Dwarven make....

Thorn scratches his head then his beard and looks puzzled at the panel "Wonder if them keys that worked back when we were lookin fer the lich fella, will work on this? That we maybe I'll put tha crown on." the dwarf pulls the crown out and dons it upon his head.

    Default Rough

Seems happier, in his own way, to be in the mountains again. The experience of the swamp and Skullcap seeming to fade quickly enough into memory as they follow the winding paths of the range. The old ranger is not sure what to think of their new companion. He gives him a bit of a wide berth, though he doesn't do or say anything to be outwardly aggressive, or purposely show his distrust. For now he will just observe him unless there is a need to engage him, not unlike when he himself first came to this party and the adventure began for him. He does what he can to forage for food along the way and finds the more skilled among the refugees to show them his tricks of the trade for finding food in higher altitudes. Once they are at the ledge, and he hears Thorn mention putting on the crown again, and he grins, leaning against the cliff face and crossing his arms, eager to watch the show.
