"Let's not waste anymore time then," Nimit said, and the four set off north toward Kalaman.
The slogging through the bogs of Estwilde commenced, and was slow going, brackish water often up to Taipan and the others' knees. Hours passed. Nimit was leading them as much west as he was north, toward the eastern slopes of the Dargaard Mountains. The cursed forest of Nightlund was on the other side of those mountains, the clerics noted.
"Since the Night of the First Star, Nightlund has been growing," Shaelish turned and informed Taipan as they trudged. But Nimit was leading them closer to the Estwilde-side of the mountains. Where there were mountains there were caves, if the group had to take shelter from a magestorm.
"There's trolls, and worse things, up in those mountains," Nimit warned.
"The Abyss!" Arturan shouted, first to feel a hot breeze. Then the roiling black clouds and rain came, before the sight of flashing blue lightning bolts in the distance. Low across the sky, indeed, another magestorm was creeping over Estwilde, on a collision course with the group's path.
Taipan followed suit as everyone increased their trek to a hustle, veering directly toward the mountains to the west. There was time to find shelter before the magestorm came over them, if shelter could be found in time.
The clerics of Winged Victory worked well together, Taipan could not help but notice. The four spread out as they were reaching the foothills and cliffs of the mountains, but not so far as to be out of earshot. Taipan understood and followed suit. The wind was picking up worse, beginning to howl in its sweltering heat, but Taipan still heard Shaelish's call. She had found something.
The four evaded the magestorm only minutes before the devastation began unearthing the swamplands. Shaelish had found a cave. Its mouth was disturbingly large, large enough for a dragon. The clerics armed themselves - Shaelish and Arturan with their maces and shields, Nimit with his great sword. No sooner did the four enter the cave in the dim light of the inevitable storm, than hairs raised on everyone's necks. A blue lightning bolt hurled from the storm blasted the mountain over the cave. The cave entrance collapsed, sealing all in utter darkness as they dove to be free of the crashing rubble. Dirt and grit from the cave's ceiling showered everyone as the mountain shook, but the ceiling held.
Shaelish's voice was the first to be heard in the pitch black, a prayer to her goddess. The end of her mace began to glow with growing light, chasing away the shadows. "Jeweled Delight", indeed. The four looked to each other and at the cave's mouth. They were sealed in tight. As to whether the ceiling above them would hold through the magestorm was unknown. The magestorm had only just begun.
The magical light illuminated the back of the cave, and when all four had found their feet again, eyes and wariness fell in that direction. Some thirty more paces into the wide cave passage was a sinkhole of some type. It was about ten feet wide, roughly circular. A foul-smelling steam wafted from it, and without the vent of the cave's mouth, began to gather. The temperature was quickly becoming hotter in the cave.
"Just a bottomless pit," Arturan said dismissively. "We should clear some of this rubble, make a vent," he added, motioning to the collapsed cave mouth. "Its better than just sitting here worrying what's gonna happen."
"I don't know," Shaelish countered. Arturan didn't seem to like the countermand. "Something tells me we're not alone in here," she said carefully and softly, locking eyes with Taipan before looking back toward the pit.
"Why do you say that? Women's intuition?" Nimit said dismissively, but not unkindly. Shaelish took the comment in stride, as if it was just a part of the large man's brusque personality.
"I don't know," she said again, even softer and warningly, staring at the pit.

The Red Condor shrieked at Sir Darvig in full wrath. Wings flapped storms of fire across the sky. "The Mage-God grows in power swifter than it appears to Paladine. This I know. A warning," Sargonnas told Darvigl, "for you to give to Paladine in your prayers."
“I will,” Darvig uttered.
