Inside the ruins of 'Skullcap'; somewhere in the swampy plains south and east of 'Hopeful Vale' somewhere in the Kharolis Mountains south of Pax Tharkas, Mid Morning of 14 Hiddumont (October), 351 AC

The adventurers react to the sudden appearance of the previously invisible Iron Hydra with the swiftness of a veteran group used to unexpected assaults on their persons....

Wincing in pain, but still able to think and act quickly, Valentheran the Elven Thief-Mage unleashes a trio of Magical Missiles that slam into and through the metallic hydra head that just bit him; leaving gaping holes in it, though it still continues to function....

Gilthanas the Elven Fighter-Mage attacks this same head; though his enchanted longsword merely glances off of its side, sending a shudder down the Elf Lord's arm that almost causes him to drop the weapon and then he screams in pain as the machine-creature's teeth chomp down on him, drawing blood and leaving tears in his fine, Elven Chain-mail armor*....

Maxavel casts her spell of Fire-Resistance and rushes over to the badly wounded, but still-in-the-fight Vale; seeing poor Gilthanas get bitten as well by the terrible 'creature' near them. Rough the Ranger strides along behind her and the two reach the side of their companion fairly quickly....

Garth Blackwood, the Paladin Knight of Solamnia rushes in and the previously un-engaged third head of the creature opened its 'mouth' and let forth a blast of flame that the Paladin strode through with his Shield held high, and though burned and yelling in pain, he pressed forward and slammed his enchanted Broadsword into the creature, tearing open a nasty gash with it in the process...

Thorn the Dwarf; still smoking from his own encounter with the creature's fiery 'breath'; roared in rage and anger and slammed his enchanted Axe into the creature and with a loud, grating sound of metal-on-metal; the Dwarf's powerful blow actually removed the head from it's mechanical neck and it was all the Dwarf could do to not have the heavy metallic 'skull' land on him as it came loose. Glancing over, he saw his friend, the brave young lad who had become a Knight Garth fighting one of the remaining two functioning heads, while the rest of the group were fighting the last functioning head, the two Elves clearly having taken some vicious wounds from the creature...

*Gilthanas is bit for 9 points of damage; he is at 17 of 29 HPs; character sheet updated

In the woods of 'Hopeful Vale' somewhere in the Kharolis Mountains south of Pax Tharkas, Mid Morning of 14 Hiddumont (October), 351 AC

A light snow was falling, though it was mostly just flurries as the half-dozen men waited anxiously in a thick clump of trees as they watched the approach of a dozen humanoids that constituted a patrol from the Red Wing of the Dragonarmies that was dangerously close to finding where the refugees of Pax Tharkas had made a home. The eight members of the patrol consisted of five hobgoblins armed with spears; a pair of Baaz Draconians armed with curved scimitars and a Bozak Draconian armed with a longsword and its magical spells….

The half-dozen men represented a significant percentage of the 60 or so total warriors the make-shift community of Hopeful Vale could field. Like the community itself, the force of half-a-dozen was made up of a group of people from various cultures. Far-Shot was a Plains Barbarian of the Que-Teh tribe; a renowned hunter armed with a bow and a quiver of a dozen arrows and next to him stood Erik Zanalin; a one-time resisdent of New Ports who had become a Cleric of Paladine like his mentor, Elistan.

Next to this pair stood Graziana Oveo; a fierce young woman who had learned the basics of fighting from her older brother and whose rage at being imprisoned in Pax Tharkas while her brother was literally worked to death in the iron mines had quickly led her to joining the armed protectors of the community. Her spear was gripped tightly and her eyes burned for revenge. Next to her stood another Plains Barbarian warrior; Hawkwind; a veteran with a quiet air of confidence and competence made all the other memers of the group feel reasurred and whose hunting knife gripped in one hand and hand-axe gripped in the other clearly showed that the ranger was ready for the fight...

The last pair of warriors including the only two Solamnic Knights in the entire community; or to be more precise, the only Knight and his squire. Sir Gavin uth Kallin and his new squire; Gerald Doorne; a veteran mercenary who had recently lost a wife and was now looking for a new purpose to dedicate his life too….

They all knew that they had to completely eliminate the entire patrol and QUICKLY; to ensure that none survived to report the location of Hopeful Vale to the rest of thier Dragon Army compatriots. Due to the magical abilities of the Bozak, Sir Gavin; the unoffical leader of the group; picked himself and Gerald to take him out first, while the others were to take out the Baaz and Hobgoblins….

When the patrol got to within 10 yards or so, Gavin gave the signal and he and Gerald burst out of the trees and rushed the surprised Bozak while the rest of the band smashed into the others and Erik cast a Silence spell centered on the Bozak to ensure it couldn't get any spells off….

Far-Shot put a pair of arrows into a Baaz draconian, quickly turning it into a statue while Graziana rammed her Spear into and through a Hobgoblin's chest, eliminating that threat in one quick motion. Hawkwind erupted out of cover and slashed the other Baaz draconian's chest deeply with his Hand-axe and then stabbed his hunting knife into the dragon-man's throat; rapidly turning it into a statue like its fellow Baaz; though Hawkwind had his hunting knife torn from his grasp as the draconian's death-throes froze it for the moment….

Sir Gavin; in the eerie quiet of the magical bubble; slashed at the Bozak twice with his longsword*; landing one blow on the magic-using draconian; but not dropping it. Gerald was now free to strike his blow**….

*Gavin can make 2 melee attacks a round as he is a 7th (or higher) level Fighter and that's one of my house rules
**Gerald is free to do whatever he likes…..post away!

Saluting his enemy with his sword, as Gavin taught him, Gerald swings his long sword at the Bozak draconian, hoping to kill it quickly.

Inside the ruins of 'Skullcap'; somewhere in the swampy plains south and east of 'Hopeful Vale' somewhere in the Kharolis Mountains south of Pax Tharkas, approximately noon of 14 Hiddumont (October), 351 AC

The battle between the companions and the metal hydra reached its climax in the dungeons of Skullcap...

Maxavel laid hands upon Valentheran and called upon the healing powers of Mishakal and some of the Elven Thief-Mage's wounds closed over and much of the pain fled his battered body*. Vale didn't notice however as he was drawing forth the spell components from his pouch and starting to recite the incantation that would release more Magical Missiles upon the mechanical monster in front of him when Rough the Ranger heard the tell-tale intake of air, like a deep breath being taken before diving into the ocean and he KNEW it heralded a burst of flame about to engulf the trio consisting of Max, Vale and himself….

The grizzled veteran shoved the young Elven Thief-Mage out fo the way, ruining his spell, but saving him from the burst of flame that caused the mountain man to scream in pain** while dropping to the ground and rolling to quickly put out the flames while Maxavel grunted and hissed a bit in pain*** though most of the fire seemed to 'wash' over her without doing much at all to the Cleric of Mishakal….

Having fallen back to draw forth his bow, Gilthanas avoided the blast of fire that hurt his companions and with an Elven curse, the young Qualinesti royal let loose a pair of wonderfully aimed enchanted arrows that smashed into the Metal Head of the Hydra and caused it to droop down and cease functioning...

The last remaining head of the hydra reached down and chomped on Garth, drawing a howl of pain from the young Paladin****, but he gamely stabbed into and through the metallic beast, as did Thorn with a mighty slash of his Axe, which disabled this last functioning head, which dropped the poor young Solamnic none-too-gently to the floor.

The room was suddenly eerily silent, save for the hisses of pain from the wounded….

Vale smiles weakly at the grizzled ranger. "Thanks for the help, you damn fool!" he says with obvious sincerity. "Hopefully that beast didn't tan your thick hide too badly." He gathers his scattered spell supplies and takes a quick inventory.
