Thorn touches neither of the skeletons not wishing to set of any other traps or awaken any other undead.

Hearing Vale's words, she nods in agreement. "True enough Master Vale. Possibly the threat of this thing has kept any wanderings at bay. It seems like a fine a place as any."

She tries to find some nook near the base of the creature to bed down, then wanders over to examine the bag in the corner. "Let's gather all the questionable items, I"ll check them for magic."

She starts gathering the bag, the dagger, the ring, takes them over to Rough and the figures. She prays for enlightenment on the nature of the items.

Looks over the items that were found on the long dead skeletons. If anything appears to be magical I will use my wand. This is probably the safest place to heal up.

While the others poke through the spoils, Vale takes some time to poke around the area, and the remains for spell components to refresh his dwindling supply.

In the woods of 'Hopeful Vale' somewhere in the Kharolis Mountains south of Pax Tharkas, Mid Morning of 14 Hiddumont (October), 351 AC

As the last two hobgoblins of the Dragonarmy patrol attempted to flee the battle site the two plainsmen of the Hopeful Vale band and the Solamnic squire launched a volley of missiles to attempt to bring them down before they could escape...

Far-shot's well aimed arrow slammed into one of the Hobgoblins, dropping it to its knees as it cried out in pain from the feathered shaft now sticking out of its back. It didn't scream for long however as Hawkwind's hurled hand-axe flipped end over end and then slammed, blade-side first, into the back of its skull. The hobgoblin dropped face-forward to the ground without another sound or twitch….

Gerald Doorne picked up the spear of his fallen comrade Graziana and launched it with a cry of rage and was savagely happy as the weapon slammed into and through the center of the Hobgoblin, dropping to the forest floor and twitching like a skewered fish for a few moments before coming to a very stiff stillness….

Gerald suddenly felt tired as the adrenaline rush of combat came to an abrupt end and he was greateful when the young Cleric Erik came over and said a prayer to Paladine while holding his hand on the squire's shoulder and some of the veteran warriror's injuries faded away*….

*Gerald was cured 5 hps, he is now at 25 of 31 hps, character sheet has been updated

"Thank you", Gerald says to the young cleric Erik as he felt his wounds begin the healing process and some of his energy return.

Kneeling next to the body of the young warrior Graziana, Gerald proceeded to close her unseeing eyes. Bowing his head, in a hushed whisper Gerald began the death chant taught to him by Gavin. "Return this man to Huma's breast, Beyond the wild, impartial skies; Grant to him a warrior's rest And set the last spark of his eyes..."

Finishing Gerald turns to Gavin and asks him: "Do you think this was the only patrol in the area? Maybe we should hide the bodies? At any rate, we should check to see if there is anything useful we can loot from them."

OOC: Gerald looks through the dead hobgoblins for anything useful...and loot.

Inside the ruins of 'Skullcap'; somewhere in the swampy plains south and east of 'Hopeful Vale' somewhere in the Kharolis Mountains south of Pax Tharkas, early afternoon thru early morning of 14-15 Hiddumont (October), 351 AC

The adventurers gathered the dagger, ring and the sack and moved them to a somewhat comfortable part of the room, which also included an archway on the opposite side of where they came in, which opened to a long tunnel leading straight away from where they entered. In the torchlight they could see a few pairs of statues facing each other from opposite sides of the passage before the light faded away with the tunnel still extending farther than they could see….

Valentheran was unable to find any usable spell components, but when the sack was emptied, he was happy to find two small pouches that contained enough spell components for 10 lower-powered (i.e. Level 1-3) spells in the first pouch and enough components for 10 more high powered spells (i.e. Level 4-6 spells) in the second pouch. A set of 7 keys on a ring came falling out as well. Also coming out of the sack were 6 highly detailed, six inch figures of warriors wearing chain-mail, wearing helmets and wielding spears and shields; and two tomes. One of which was a spell book, which contained 5 spells Valentheran had never seen before, including several he was not yet powerful enough to cast*; and the other was mostly blank, though the first twenty or so pages essentially was a journal/notes of an expedition being undertaken by one Theophilus Zendu, Red-robed Mage (clearly the author and presumably the skeleton of the human/elf sized) and Fenawick 'Fen' Snaresnapper, the Kender...

The journal tells of how Theophilus, in the year 286 AC, in a desire to gain the treasures of the Archmage Fistandantilus, learned all he could of the mage who fell at the end of the Dwarfgate war and how he supposed the mage would have become a Lich, though one trapped at the site he fell; namely Zhaman or Skullcap. Theophilus had also become friends with an adventurous Kender named Fenawick Snaresnapper who had found an enchanted Dagger that before the Catacylsm had been blessed by Clerics of Kiri-Jolith and Paladine to serve as a weapon against evil creatures, in particular the Undead.

The dagger had a large orange-yellow gem in its pommel and was appropriately named Sunbeam. It was always a potent weapon to defeat creatures, but once a day the wielder of the dagger by saying its name in Solamnic it could project a ray of Sunlight that was some 10 feet wide and 60 feet long and any undead the ray touched would take significant damage from the ray while also possibly being blinded for a time from the intense light. Of equal interest to Theophilus was the dagger's other special ability; which was once a day when the word for 'hidden' was said in Solamnic by the wielder, anyone within 10 feet of the dagger would be completely invisible to any undead for several hours until they attacked the undead, walked too far away from the blade or its enchantment ran out.

Theophilus had also done his research and he knew that Lichs, while possesing the spell-casting abilities of Arch-mages were also immune to non-enchanted weapons, any Charm or Sleep inducing spells, any Cold based spells and could see through any Illusions (though NOT the special invisibility conferred by the Dagger). In addition, there clawed hands were fearsome weapons and they could see creatures on the Astral plane and cause Fear in any non experienced adventurers. Luckily, Theophilus and Fen had been through several dungeon crawls and other 'interesting' experiences together, so they weren't worried about that. The last intersting tid-bit about Liches that Theophilus wrote down was that they typically had a 'soul object', usually a gemstone, phylactery or amulet of some kind that served as a way to save thier essence if defeated in battle. The essence would slowly regain its power over the course of a few days to a week, so unless the soul object itself was destroyed, the Lich would never truly be defeated. Naturally, the Lich was sure to always hide its soul object in some very hard-to-find place.

Theo wasn't interested in finding and destroying Fistandantilus' soul object, he just wanted to defeat the Lich enough to be able to loot his treasure horde. He had called in some favors and thru the use of some powerful Divination magic, he had a pretty good idea where Fistandantilus was. His journal told of how he and Fen had made a bargain with a Dragon-of-shadow, promising to take out the Lich in return for the Dragon to leave them alone….and of coming down a long central shaft, where they found the key set, of which Theo believed would be useful to opening the way to Fistandantilus' lair. They also defeated several Shadows along the way and a wandering Wraith…..but clearly, they had NOT been prepared for the invisible Iron Hydra.

Theo's plan had been to use Fen's Dagger to conceal thier presence from the Lich when they were close to the lair and then to use the 6 figurines, which the Red-robed mage called '1 time use Automaton warriors which would grow to man-sized and be able to be commanded to fight by the person who threw them down and said the command word: ARISE in Ergothic' and then when they came upon Fistandantilus to send in the automatons and launch a magicl assault. The assaul would start with a Fireball spell cast by Theo and Fen's Sunbeam ray. Then, if they were still alive, Theo would cast a series of Magic Missiles from his Ring of Spell Storing while Fen would hurl his magical dagger. If the Lich was still up at that point, Fen would run over to Theophilus and he would use the Teleport spell to escape to a pre-arranged lair in the Kharolis mountains...

That was pretty much where the journal stopped. Maxavel's Detect Magic spell revelaed that the Sack, Spellbook, Dagger, Ring, Keys and Magical figures were all enchanted. Gilthanas' Identifer wand revealed that the Sack was a Sack-of-Holding (basically, a bigger Bag of Holding…with a strap so that it can be carried like a Backpack or satchel); the ring was a Ring of Spell Storing with 5 slots; only 3 full with the following spells at the 9th level of ability: Magic Missile x2, Teleport; the 6 figures were Automaton Warriors, which as per above when cast on the ground and the word 'Arise' said in Ergothic, would grow into 6 foot figures which would last for up to 6 hours before crumbling into dust and which could follow any basic commands (guard, attack, defend, etc.) and fight as experienced warriors (i.e 4 HD, 25 hps) wielding the equivalent of enchanted spears (3-8 pts of damage, can hit anything only hit by magic weapons, cannot throw the spear), and wearing the equivalent of Chain Mail and Shield (AC 4); the Keys seemed to be 'Keys of Unlocking the Faces of Nuitari' and Gilthanas' wand couldn't determine much more than that; and finally the Dagger known as Sunbeam; which was a powerful weapon (Dagger +3, double damage vs. Undead) which once a day could use its Sunbeam power per above (3d12 damage to any Undead caught in the 60 foot long, 10 foot wide beam; also has to make a Save or be Blinded for 1d12 rounds) and its Invibility 10' radius to Undead power once a day which lasts for 1d4 hours**.

The party absorbed all this as a long, quiet, but uneventful night passed in the dungeons of Skullcap….

*The Spellbook has 2 Third Level Spells Vale has never seen: Fireball & Invisibility 10' Radius; 2 Fourth level spells you can read the title too, but can't try to learn yet: Polymorph Self, Fire Shield and one 5th level spell you can read the title too but can't try to learn yet; Teleport.

If you so choose, I can make rolls to see if Vale learns (and copies) the 3rd Level spells into his spell book.

**Gilthanas used 5 charges from his wand (Dagger, Ring, Minature Automaton, Keys, Sack) sheet updated.

Let me know if/how you guys want to split up the Spell Components. (i.e. 5 for Vale, 5 for Gil, etc.)

The old ranger listens intently to what the spellcasters have to say about this new cache of loot and nods slowly. Once they have heard what there is to learn he reached out for the dagger, examining it thoughtfully and then thurst it out toward Garth, indicating he should lay claim to it. "I believe you've more than earned this." He then steps back to let the "youngins" (half of which are greater than or in Thorn's case, equal to his own age) pick their own from the pile, showing little interest in laying claim himself but seeming curious of what each will take. He takes a long pull from his waterskin and splashes his face a little before passing it around. He hoped tonight to dream of cool mountain streams on autumn days and the warm pool he frequented just outside Qualinost... He needed a bath.

OOC In case you aren't subscribed to the OOC Thread: Part the Second, we're trying to organize the distribution of loot over there and put together a plan for facing Fistandantilus.
