Disgusting! Giant maggots were attacking one of his new companions, the rakish looking one. So much had happened in the last few moments. New friends, new challenges, new items, and the first potential contact with someone who knew his parents, that the orphan had ever had.

But overriding all of this was the feeling of disgust. Two giant maggots had emerged through the carcass of the dead spider, spewing effluence everywhere.

Trying to gain a tactical advantage, Celtar decided use the tactic he had early intended for the spider. Moving into a better position, Celtar fired his crossbow at one of the maggots. Like a streak, the bolt, enchanted with the light spell, flew through the cavern.

Evelyn sighed as Florance went off by himself... only to get himself into trouble. He was going to be a handful she saw. She smiled though as everyone reacted to the threat as a team. Perhaps this can work. She thought. Ignoring the scales that everyone seemed to want she turned from helping Anevia and drew her bow. She knew the dangers of rushing blindly into a fight. She took a step towards the putrid vermin and let an arrow fly.

OOC: Move action to get bow. 5' step SE, Fires at #2

Hael looked up from the scale, quickly tucking it away as she spotted the decaying body lurch and split. Lifting her bow from her side, she notched an arrow, drawing it back with ease.

Stepping forward, she released her bowstring. Its feathers brushed past Florence before sinking into the maggot in front of him.

Calling upon one of his favorite tricks, Florence’s spell made his hide harder for the maggots to hit, assuming that the vermin’s teeth lacked an arcane aspect. Thrusting forward, he was amazed at how easily his rapier cut into the flabby flesh of the giant maggot. Before the creatures could attempt to take another chunk of his skin, he agilely tumbled away from the nasty, jagged teeth gnashing at him, and the vile smell of regurgitated spider guts. Looking in dismay, he spotted the slime of maggot blood on his previously clean blade.

Moving toward battle with determination, Fhaora juked by Florence as he suddenly appeared in the area she had intended to occupy, her shield raised to greet their foe. With her chakram in hand, a weapon rarely seen in Kenabres, she released it with effort, sending it with deadly accuracy at the same target that the bard had attacked. The circular bladed weapon cut deep, severing the maggot into two pieces, its slimy entrails pouring onto the cavern floor with a disgusting swish of motion, filling the area with even fouler stench of half-digested death.

Appalled by the appearance of the vile vermin, Celtar was swift to react with his crossbow. Moving into a better position to gain the best aim at his target, he fired the illuminated bolt at the remaining maggot. The light from his spell faded slightly from his sight as it traveled in an instant, then stuck into the side of the wriggling creature. The bolt was lost inside the maggot, causing it to glow with a strange, eerie light, as though it were an apparition. The new location of his lighted bolt shed enough light in the area for all to see the desiccated corpse of the dead spider, and the slain giant maggot with gore covering the floor where it had fallen.

Gently perturbed at the brash young man’s hasty action, Evelyn pulled her bow, and with precise aim, let fly a deadly projectile. Her arrow pierced the glowing maggot, killing it instantly. Celtar’s bolt continued to glow, now a bit brighter again, as strange, gooey liquid poured from the maggot’s wounds.

Hael knew that giant maggots werevoracious scavengers, feeding constantly, gorging themselves on the dead in preparation for their transformation into giant flies. Their pallid, corpulent bodies were often the size of human children, and their rasping teeth were capable of eating even the bones of a corpse. Giant maggots had no legs, and moved with a disturbing undulation as they crawled over their meals. They fed for 2 weeks, often moving from one corpse to another, before entering a pupal stage, after which they emerged as giant flies.

It appeared that these particular specimens were fairly close to maturity in their current state. After Evelyn’s expert shot, the druid paused for a heartbeat, noticing the last maggot had quit moving. Her elven eyes were keen, and had served her well in the Estrovian Forest to the east of Kenabres. They didn’t fail her below the city either, for she held her arrow only for an instant. Suddenly, three more of the maggots burst forth, wriggling sickly as they seemed to hesitate. Letting her arrow fly, it whistled through the dim light of the cavern, sinking into a newly discovered maggot. It flinched, but did not seem to die from the projectile.

Behind the heroes, the other towns folk moved as well. Aravashnial found his way beside Celtar, tapping his staff to pick his way between rocks. Anevia hobbled closer, wincing in pain, readying her bow for an attack, making sure that none of the maggots got near the others. Horgus, not known to be a brave man, stepped backwards, putting more distance between he and the threat.

As more maggots burst forth, Evely sneered in disgust. She kept advancing with her bow, letting another arrow fly and sinking into one of the pupa. She then dropped her bow and strapped her shield onto her arm preparing for the inevitable melee that would ensue. "Everyone focus your attacks, lets drop one then another. We will get through this!" Evelyn said loud enough for all to hear, hoping to keep everyone focused and working together as they did on the first two.

More gruesome filth! Celtar thought with concern. It seemed these maggots weren't terribly dangerous, just a prolific nuisance. There numbers seemed to keep growing. And so shall ours!.

Moving his arm in a wide circle, Cedric began chanting a spell of summoning. "Aku colang ente berlua, sententia ente ...."

As the chanting progressed, Celtar felt the tattoo on his forhead tingle and burn slightly. Ignoring the sensation, which Celtar had come to understand was typical for this incantation, at least for him, he continued with the chanting "...ex plagiarius, reus ke mas quod daya"

Finishing the chant, Celtar stopped his circle making motions and instead pointed to the area where he intended his summons to appear.

    Default Fhaora Songsteel

Fhaora agreed with Evely and calmly held the line. She kept her shield up and unbuckled another chakram from her belt.

She focused her attack on the maggot that Evely attacked, but her shield got in the way as she loosed the chakram.

She squinted slightly and shrugged her shoulders a little in disappointment, but otherwise seemed unphased by her tactical mishap.

She whispered to herself, "Wisdom is birthed from failure. Stay the course."

Florence inwardly marveled at the teamwork of his tactical retreat accompanied by the impressive ranged assault of the women. He especially marveled at himself for his fine stab with his rapier. The two maggots were quickly dispatched. But more were undulating and wiggling out from the dead spider, causing Florence's lip to twitch in revulsion.

Songsteel had stepped up with a large shield and Angel Eyes was now preparing herself for melee. Celtar was chanting magical words, and though Florence knew not what the spell might do, he assumed it might help. With the front line support in place, Florence decided he'd kindly bow out and not be getting regurgitated on again. He took a step back further behind the protection of shields, reaching for his wooden club, and hurled it at a maggot. It slipped in his slimy hand as he let go, throwing off his aim, and it sailed overhead to clack off a giant boulder and fall clicking and clacking to a rest on the cavern floor.

The Red Condor shrieked at Sir Darvig in full wrath. Wings flapped storms of fire across the sky. "The Mage-God grows in power swifter than it appears to Paladine. This I know. A warning," Sargonnas told Darvigl, "for you to give to Paladine in your prayers."

    “I will,” Darvig uttered.

The elven woman wasn't as disgusted as the others seemed to be by the gore before them. As more emerged from the arachnid's crumbling exoskeleton, she notched another arrow in silence and fired a shot at one of the newly emerged maggots. It sunk sharply into its meaty flesh, eliciting a strange, gurgled screech from the creature.

It pleased her to know that those around her displayed some skill to work with one another in the face of a threat. She found comfort in knowing that none in the cavern would be left to fend for themselves in this time of peril, as the abyssal forces razed the city above.

With the maggots emerging from the rotting carcass of the giant spider, the gathered heroes formed a line of defense in preparation for the assault of the undulating, wriggling threat. Evelyn’s arrow found it mark, sinking into the soft flesh of the insectoid creature, while Fhaora’s chakram clanked off into the shadows beyond her intended target.

From the ether, Celtar called upon his arcane talent to summon an eagle from the heavens. It swooped from its own plane of existence, ready to battle its foe at the sorcerer’s command.

Bringing forth a club, Florence hurled it at one of the maggots, but like Fhaora’s chakram, his aim was off and he watched as the club landed off to the side. Hael’s bow, crafted by her own hands from the branch of a tree she had coaxed into allowing her a gift of itself to make the weapon, fired true for her once again. The arrow pierced the flabby flesh of the giant maggot, passing through and then disappearing into the darkness of the cavern beyond. The maggot wiggled no more.

Lending her own bow to the fight, Anevia drew back and let loose an arrow, affording her a glancing blow. She growled at the minimal damage she had caused. Turning his head toward where the threat seemed to be coming from, the blinded Aravashnial waited for the right moment. As one of the vermin advanced, the called upon his own magical ability, sending out a dart of magical acid. However, his blindness proved to be more than he could overcome at the moment, and his projectile missed, splashing onto the floor, sizzling the earth until the arcane energy dissipated and it disappeared as though it had never been.

Horgus remained in place, staring at the horrific maw filled with sharp, gore covered teeth. He prepared himself for the possibility that one of the creatures may get through the defensive line there to protect him.

With the eagle’s sudden appearance before it, the maggot gnashed its teeth, trying to bite the raptor, but its attack was feeble in its attempt. The other remaining worm wiggled and twisted itself to bring itself before the paladin and bard. However, the effort was more so that it was unable to take a bite out of either foe.
