Hiya! Just wanted to identify myself as a lurker. I wish that I had the old rules. I guess I'll just have to read along instead. Can't wait for this to start!

Glad to know that there's a fan out there before this has even started! If you'd like Superball; you can jump in....either with a character of your own or taking control of one of the NPCs. While the rules are certainly helpful (and it's probably not too hard to get ahold of a 1st Edition AD&D Player's Handbook); it's not required. You can probably pick up on a lot of the rules as the game goes along; and with a Play by Post game; much of it is invisible to those reading along on-line. Heck...I can make all the roles or even just tell you what to roll if you like?

Not trying to sound pushy....if you'd just like to remain an observer; that's cool too; either way; welcome aboard!

It's awfully hard to get ahold of a 1st edition Rulebook in rural England, maxvale. Plus, I've never played it before. I did a little AD&D 2nd, but that was a LOOOOONG time ago. If there were an online resource, perhaps, but it just feels a little confusing to read about: taking this option from this book, and those options from that book, allowing this but not that. I can barely keep up, and I don't own any of the old rules.

I downloaded the OSRIC. Are you familiar with this?

I know OF it; but I don't own it or ever seen it. Hmm....I wonder how much it would cost to mail something to you....I think I can get ahold of a 1st Edition PHB pretty easy....and if you remember anything from 2nd Edition; it's not much different at all. I wouldn't worry too much about all the rules and variations thereof.....in reality; PBPs (or at least the ones I run and have played in at any rate)....really don't require much in the way of rules knowledge. The situation will be more like this:

DM's post: "A band of three yellowish-brown Dragonmen attack your party; swinging curved swords as they hiss menacingly at you!"

Out of character: Tell me what each of you are doing this round and roll for initiative.

Player 1's post: "Joe Schmo the mighty warrior swings his Broadsword in response at the nearest dragonman!"

Out of character: I rolled a 4 on my 1d6; -1 for Dex 16 and +3 for Weapon speed for a final score of 6. My attack roll is a 13 on a 1d20; +1 for STR 17 and +1 for being Specialized in Broadsword for a total of 15. If that hits; I rolled 2d4 for damage equalling 6; +1 for STR 17 and +1 for Specialization in Broadsword for a total of 8 Damage.

Player 2's post: "Jane Schmane cringes back in fear and quickly grabs some spell components from her belt pouch and attempts to cast Magic Missile; directing all 3 missiles at a different Dragonman than Joe is attacking".

Out of Character: She rolls a 2 on her d6 for Initiative; -2 for DEX 17 and +1 for a first level Spell for a final total of 1 for Initiative. Damage rolls are 3d4+3 for a total of 11.

DM's post: Out of character: Okay; the Draconians Initiative is a 5; so Jane's spell goes off and then they attack and then Joe attacks last.

In Character: "Jane quickly casts her spell and glowing missiles of energy streak into one of the dragonmen and the creature falls back to the ground with a horrible scream; turning into stone as it hits the ground.

It's two companions however swing their curved swords; one at each of you; and while Jane is able to just barely duck out of the way; Joe is sliced by the blade of his opponent; leaving a stinging, bloody wound on his left forearm. Joe roars in anger and pain and retaliates with a return swing that almost cuts the dragonman in half. It dies with a strange hissing/gurgling sound; turning to stone as it does so and possibly trapping Joe's weapon!"

Out of Character: Joe is hit for 4 points of damage and I need you to make a Dexterity check with a +3 penalty; i.e. roll a 1d20 and add 3. If the total is higher than Joe's DEX score; his weapon is stuck in the draconian's stony corpse.

Did that make sense to you amigo? You could just tell me what you want your character to do; and either I can make all the rolls or tell you what dice to roll with what modifiers and you can do so on any number of dice-rolling programs.

If you're interested in playing and/or me sending you a PHB let me know via PM. Thanks!

Allrighty peoples; I've got good news! Superball has agreed to join our little band of heroes and will be taking over the NPC Cleric; Maxavel. Welcome aboard Superball!

I will be putting up the first post of the game here shortly.....only pressing thing is Mr. Garth; if you could please finish up your character with some HP rolls (5d10); selection of Weapon Proficiencies and spending cash on equipment; I'd appreciate it!

Also....boneguard; I do believe Thorn has one more weapon proficiency to select. (I don't make Fighters use more than 1 slot on Specialized weapons....Fighters have few enough advantages over other classes...I figure them having more slots for more weapons is one of the few)

So Do you mean I get my specialisation for free? In which case yes I have an extra weapon slot, otherwise I' good. (4 base +1 extra at level 4.)

    1. Crossbow
    2. Specialisation
    3. Horseman mace
    4. Dagger
    5. Short sword.

    Not free...but it only costs 1 slot.....i.e.

    Light Crossbow
    Light Mace (Horseman's Mace)
    Dagger
    Shortsword

These are the 4 you chose at the beginning (Level 1); and of them 1 you choose to specialize in. (In your case; Light Crossbow)

Then at Level 4; you get a 5th slot.

    That make sense?

Well it's a "free" specialization as UA (p18) indicates that specialisation cost you an extra slots (2 extra slots for the bows) for a total of 2 slots (3 for bows) per specialised weapons.

But since you do not charge me that additional slot, then yes I have another weapon proficiency to fill up.
