    Default Novana's Tarokka Deck Reading

    Novana

"It is a wild adventure we are on. Here, as we are rushing along through darkness, with the cold from the river seeming to rise up and strike us, with all the mysterious voices of the night around us, it all comes home. We seem to be drifting into unknown places and unknown ways. Into a whole world of dark and dreadful things."*

The whole time she had been speaking in trance-like tones her eyes had drifted back into the middle of her head, leaving milky white orbs, bloodshot and ancient with sagging, hollow dark circles around them. Her skeletal hands coated only with the thinnest layer of see-through skin stretched tight ended with long fingernails painted dark violet, resting on a swirling crystal ball of mists. Suddenly the vistana crone snapped out of her trance and flailed, her glassy eyes returning and her hands trembling as she weakly reached for her tea. Madame Eva looked at the young full-lipped woman who sat across the table from her in the old crone's vardo, one Novana Hiregaard of Nova Vaasa.

Novana thought of the mission she had been sent on by Bastion Sarlata Otrava of the Home Faith of Ezra.

"Why have all the attempts made to establish churches of Ezra in Barovia failed? The last Acolyte I sent to Barovia, to do just so, was three months ago. Sentire Abonia Gestin is her name, and I sent her to the town of Teufuldorf, and not heard from her since. What has happened to her, why has she not sent word? Go, and return or send word of what you find," Bastion Sarlata Otrava had asked of her, her voice like that of an angel. Her silky white gown blushed, near transparent, her hair long and dark in contrast. Her silver longsword was sheathed at her side and her holy symbol matched the crimson color of her striking almond eyes. Novana Hiregaard was to find out.

Novana had taken her eye-patched** (taken out by a crossbow bolt in Nova Vaasa by a group of brigands) and large-headed** steed swiftly to Sturben, then back into harsh, rural Barovia, the realm held in the grip of tyranny and superstition under the rule of Count Strahd von Zarovich XI, its landscape dominated by the Balinok mountains, particularly the snow-capped peaks Mount Baratok and Ghakis. She came into heavily fortified Krezk, and headed south to Zeidenburg. Her next stop was Teufuldorf, but the road between the two towns was longer than she had expected, it seemed. She was not going to reach it by dark. As the cry of wolves in the forest split the dusk she came upon a vistana camp, deciding it would be safer to at least attempt to keep camp with them instead of camping alone for the night. The vistana men were charming and inviting to her, as Novana was an attractive maiden. She soon found herself sitting in the vardo of the camp's raunie, Madame Eva.

"This is what I see, but not for you Novana, necessarily, Madame Eva continued when she recovered, trembling hand setting down her tea in a way Novella was sure it would spill. It did a little. "But I am the oldest and wisest of all the Vistana seers, she croaked at Novana, "...at reading your fortune with the Tarokka cards. My deck, is the First Deck. Only a small price you must pay."

The Madame held out her quaking palm for coin.

The Red Condor shrieked at Sir Darvig in full wrath. Wings flapped storms of fire across the sky. "The Mage-God grows in power swifter than it appears to Paladine. This I know. A warning," Sargonnas told Darvigl, "for you to give to Paladine in your prayers."

    I will, Darvig uttered.

Novana pulled a gold bridle from her bag.

"I would be honored, Madame Eva." Novana placed the coin in the hand of the old vistani.

Madame Eva gave a toothless grin as she accepted the coin from the giorgio. She blew out a few candles and dimmed the lantern hanging near her. Shadows crept in the cramped vardo. Only the three small black tapers of a silver candelabra that sat on the table flickered. The raunie wiped off the table with her shaky fingers. It took her a long time. She retrieved a brightly colored scarf and laid it over most of the table. It took what seemed to Novana like years, but the old crone managed to slowly and carefully pluck a candle from the candelabra and light a strong incense that made Novana feel light-headed. Then after an eternity the old crone finally had replaced the candle back in its holder. At last, she took a sip of her tea. Novana could hear through the vardo wall, the wolves of Barovia in the distance crying howls in the night.

The fortune teller pulled out a carved wooden box and sat it on the table. Slowly, she opened it. She reached in and pulled something out wrapped in faded silk and set it on the scarf. Slowly, she carefully undid the silk decorated with warding symbols to reveal a runed deck of large cards.

"You are sure you wish to see your fate, young one?" Though it was a question, Madame Eva continued and was smiling a toothless grin at herself.

Madame Eva placed nine cards face down on the table in the shape of a cross. "Turn over, the center card. "First we will see, who is who, and whoooo are you."

    Novana turned it over.

An elderly wizard stood while a younger one knelt at her feet presenting a large white tome for her to read. The elder wore a crown capped with flame to show her nobility and pride while the younger one looked up at her in admiration. Two stars shone in the sky, evincing the radiant glow of knowledge and fact, and the warmth of compassion and understanding. A small snake coiled about the younger figure's throat like a necklace.

FOCUS CARD: Two of Stars, THE DIVINER

"There are two of you," Madame Eva whispered. "One is prideful and of noble blood, the other cursed, and in admiration or envy of your noble blood and education. The cursed one is hidden like a snake in the grass to you, but you are yet unaware, deluded. You are a seeker of knowledge, a diviner of fact versus fiction, and not without forthright fairness, yes?"

Novana had her doubts about the accuracy of the vistani's reading. Mere coincedence. But, she was a guest and didn't want to offend.

    "You are most correct."

"Of course," Madame Eva cackled. "But you have seen nothing yet." The crone's one eye stared at her, widening, as if giving an ominous warning that Novana was to see things she was not meant to see. Novana was paralyzed by the sight of it.

"First," the crone continued, "I must see...a bit of your recent past...". Madame Eva turned another card.

A figure in dark robes gestured at a blindfolded man caught within a finery complex diagram. Behind the robed figure were seven standing stones. Each was inscribed with a star, which glowed faintly in the light beyond the firelight.

RECENT PAST, SEVEN OF STARS, THE ILLUSIONIST

"Your whole family is deluded!" The crone rasped, shakingly reaching for her tea as she cackled. "And you have only recently traveled from afar, where one named Malken fools all in your bloodline."

This was true, Novana thought. Malken was an infamous criminal overlord. The shadowy figure was rumored to pull the strings of all that occurred in the underworld of the city of Liara and a good deal of illicit activity elsewhere in Nova Vaasa. Malken was practically a bogeyman to the many poor of Nova Vaasa. In the darkest alleys of the towns of Nova Vaasa, it was Malken's word, not young Prince Othmar Bolshnik, that ruled.

"Also, you have recently taken up a cause you do not yet understand," the crone warned, pointing a shaky finger at Novana's holy symbol to Ezra.

Frozen in place, Novana felt the chill of fear. The crone's eye had fallen upon her. Her mind raced as she tried to remember what she had learned about these mysterious Vistana. Perhaps some well-placed tact could defuse this already uncomfortable siuation?

"Please, Madame Eva, why cast such baneful gaze upon the Guardian's humble servant? Have I offended? If so, what recompense is worthy of such trespass?"

"Why, none Novana," Madame Eva said with a toothless smile. "I merely am preparing you for what you are about to witness, and I sensed your lack of faith the moment you entered my vardo. I can see already, with only two cards shown, that your tale is one of note, in the future ongoings of the domains of dread."

Madame Eva paused to sip her tea.

"You fascinate me. Before we foretell your future, your enemies and allies, let us delve deeper into your distant past."

Madame Eva turned a third card.

A skulking figure, face concealed by a dark hooded cloak, crouched behind an elderly cleric. The cleric was pouring water from a jeweled ewer into a bowl. Obviously performing a ritual, he seemed to have no idea the traitor was there. The sneaky villain was stealing an ornate holy statue that sat on a table near the priest. The statue, the robes of the priest, and the dark figure's cloak were all decorated with Glyphs, for a total of nine.

"Ahhh, yes. Yes." Madame Eva whispered, as if more and more were making sense to her. She took a dreadfully long sip of tea before speaking again, forcing Novana to wait in chilled suspense.

"On the day you were born, Novana, there was a traitor to the Church of Ezra, marking heresy to gods and man alike. A relic of the Church was stolen that day, by one of its own - a cleric, paladin, or the like. The heretic deliberately turned upon all who depended on him or her and believed in his teachings. And possibly, Malken was pulling the strings, manipulating the traitor. Perhaps this is why the Church of Ezra is not widely spread in Nova Vaasa, such as is The Lawgiver. It is no coincidence you were born on the same day as the heretic's betrayal. Perhaps, it is your life's quest to hunt down the traitor and return the relic to the Church of Ezra. But yet, we do not for sure. The cards of your future shall tell more..."

    "... More. Please..."

    Novana

"Ahhhh," Madame Eva crooned with interest and delight as she turned the forth card. Novana didn't.

A skeletal horse reared, its skull-faced rider wrapped in a black cloak. The horse snorted fire, illuminating the scene. The rider carried a scythe. Beneath the horse's feet lay a headless corpse. Behind him was a field full of tombstones.

    NEAR FUTURE: THE HORSEMAN

Instead, at the sight of the card Novana fell to the floor in convulsions, writhing wildly and uncontrollably. Just as she had to admit Madame Eva's Tarokka Deck had accurately predicted her past, and more, Novana's card of her near future was beyond foreboding. Madame Eva waited patiently, unphased by Novana's convulsions. As if she knew they were going to happen. Madame Eva took the time to fetch a cup of tea for Novana and set it on the Nova Vassan's side of the table.

Novana made it back to her chair, eventually. She gazed at The Horseman again.

"Your near future is dark, Novana. Very dark. The Horseman of the High Deck is the most darkly ominous of all the cards within the Tarokka Deck. I am Madame Eva, the first and wisest, and this is the first deck...any other Vistana seer would discontinue the tarokka reading at this point, and you would be escorted out of the vistana camp. But I will do no such thing, for I am the most experienced Tarokka reader in all the realms and mists. What the rest of the cards will foretell may be too important, not just for you, but for all. So I will continue your reading. The Horseman is the symbol of Death, or complete irredeemable loss. The card signifies calamity of terrifying dimensions for you. But all is not lost. You will have an ally in the near term. Only by embracing their aid, can you possibly avoid Death."

Madame Eva took a sip of her tea.

"Would like to know who this ally is, my dear?"

Novana caught her breath, exhausted by her convulsive display. Sweet Ezra, what was happening? This woman possesses sight beyond the Mists and powers beyond my comprehension, thought Novana. If Madame Eva's foresight matches her hindsight, then anything she divines may hold the core of truth.

Composing herself, Novana gently kissed the silver longsword pendant which hung from a chain about her slender neck. She would not doubt nor fear for Our Guardian in the Mists was with her.

"Madame Eva, I humbly request you reveal this ally to me."

Novana took a deep breath and held it. Her eyes closed.
