It is just some weeks after the destruction of Kendermore, and things are not going well for poor Krynn. And in Flotsam (suitably enough) is gathered the living flotsam from the tides of hard times. And here, at a small inn by the humble name of "Makeshift" a small group finds each other, and decides to do something, anything, for a world that is falling to pieces.
And the rest is up to whoever that wants to join...
Name: Amaryll Lost
Sex: Female
Race: Kender (afflicted)
Quest: Running away. From everything.
***
IC: Hanging off her cloak, heavy with rainwater, she listlessly slumped on a chair. It felt like she was getting nowhere, which probably was true, since she roamed with no sense of direction or goal.
The times were dark. So dark, she thought miserably, that you could not distinguish yourself anymore. Nobody could tell who they were, what they had become. You rather looked away and pretended that it didn't hurt.

Twitching at the unfamilliar voice, she looked hastily up. Seeing the features of what was unmistakably an elf, she realxed slightly.
"I'm Amaryll."
In her mind, a small voice added the plea "please don't hurt me" and she hated herself for it. Where had the world gone where she could believe the best of everybody? Where had the world gone where everyone was a friend that you had yet to get to know? Where had the all the words gone, everything she had wanted to say? Where had all the exitement gone?
She remembered what she had been, and a trace of that was still left, she knew, waiting like a tremolous bud. But the rest had bleeded away in the instant the light had died in the eyes of her brother.
"What is an elf doing in these parts?" She wondered quietly, watching him with shy green eyes.

"I have not enough money for food" she shrugged. "Just for a room. But I caught a rabbit yesterday, so I'm not really starved. And as for the cleric... No cleric can bring the dead back to life. No cleric can build up my home again. No cleric can kill the dragon who leveled it with the ground."

"Th...thank you" she mumbled, eyes downcast. To tell the truth, she was so hungry that she could barely walk.
As they waited for their food, they were suddenly joined by a tall man dressed in armor joined them, asking for permission to sit down. Her eyes immediatly jumping to the floor, Amaryll nodded without a word.

Name: Arrow

Arrow pushed the inn's door open, letting it swing into the wall with a bang. The Trickster lowered her hood, revealing long whispy curls of blond hair that she brushed carelessly out of eyes that were ever changing colors. She unfastened the silver broach that lay beneath her throat and thrust her rain-soaked cloak into the hands of one of the inn's employees who happened to be passing by.
Her cold gaze wandered over the inn's occupants, mostly humans seeking to drown their sorrows in the strong liquid they so diligently poured down their throats. One table caught Arrow's eye in particular. An elf, a kender, a what looked like another human were all seated together. By their body language, their stiff movements and careful glances at each other, none of them had been previosuly aquainted. Arrow's pale lips twisted into a sneer and she strode towards the table the threesome occupied.

The newcomer did not seem to be a very nice person, Amaryll noticed with a slight twinge of something uncomfortable and strange, something that she hated and did not want to think about, something that hurted. Yet, she would not refuse anyone a fair chance. She knew how that felt. "Hi" she said shyly to the strange woman. "Do you want to sit down?"

"If you don't mind, of course.' Arrow smiled pleasantly in answer to the kender's question. She could already feel the mistrust that emenated from those gathered at the table, but the trickster didn't care. She took a seat at the table and leaned forward on her elbows.
'Quite an interesting gathering we have here, wouldn't you say?"

Amaryll felt the feeling of being watched like a slight prickling in the neck, and stole a quick glance over her shoulder. A human man, just some tables away, was watching them intently. She quickly turned away.
"The times are such as to attact interesting occurences" she answered the trickster, a faint bitterness colouring her voice.
'Not a very kenderish thing to say,' Arrow remarked, not caring if her comment had been a little too personal or not. 'And yes, he's been watching us for a while now. Shall we do something about it?" she smiled dangerously, her eyes shifting colors again.

Glad she made it inside before the down pour Natasha watched as the Inn started to fill with those trying to get out of the storm. Sipping her glass of warm spiced mead she took special interest in a large group that was forming at the bar. The Kender had been their first and seemed a bit off to her as far as kender go, but Krynn had seen bad times as of late and even Kender can have their bad days under such times.
Having tired of watching the room she approced the bar and nodded over the barmaid.
"I'm going to be leaving in the morning, please have my tea ready by sun up"
Handing the barmaid 4 silver she glanced and the group and smiled then started to head upstairs. She had a long trip ahead of her if the things she had been told were true.
Arrow laughed good-naturedly at the kender's comment and glanced at the red robe who smiled at their group before moving on.
'No, I had in mind something more or less like demanding who he is and why he has such an interest in us. Of course,' the Trickster added, pulling back the left sleeve of her tunic an inch or so to reveal a curved dagger fastened on her wrist by a leather sheath, 'He might need some persuasion.'

Amaryll shook her head. "Humans" she sighed. "Remind me never to try to understand you. We could ask politely first, you know? Mind, it is better if I don't, since he'll probably not listen to ME. After all, I'm just a kender." She looked down at her own hands, eyes more sad than bitter.
'If he has any sort of wits about him,' Arrow said thoughtfully, more to herself then anyone else, 'he will listen to you. In fact he should pay as much attention to you as he can, like you said...you are a kender. He'll want to make sure he leaves with all his possesions intact.'
Arrow shrugged carelessly and half-turned in her seat to face the man who was still watching them. She smiled charmingly at him and spoke to the kender and her companions, not bothering to lower her voice. 'He doesn't look particularly dangerous, I imagine a knife in the right place would take care of him.'

"That is probably the point" Amaryll answered with a shrug. "He would want to keep as far away as possible." Listlessly, she threw the tricksters money-pouch back over the table. " You see? And I see no reason to kill him, and killing without reason is not something that I am particulary fond of." Her eyes darkened for a moment.
Arrow tucked her money pouch back into the pocket the kender had taken it from and smiled slightly, impressed. It wasn't often things like that got by her, even if the culprit was a kender.
'Very nice,' she commented, her eyes gleaming. 'I suppose I agree with you, killing without reason is a bit primative. Have you ever killed any one?" She asked, making the matter sound casual. Arrow suspected the kender had never laid a finger on anyone, but the Trickster was enjoying the awkwardness of the situation.

Natasha paced her room. Smiling she gazed out her window. She had actually caught up with him. In fact, she had beat him here and that was amazing, truely amazing. He really must have no idea she is there. When she started out on this mission Natasha was so mad she was speachless. She hated feeling like their pawn but what choice did she have? She would much rather, at least at this point, be the hunter and not the hunted. Once she finished learning those last few spells the tables may turn. But that time had not yet come and so she would do their will, ever with a smile and a yes master. Drawing a book from the pack she softly spoke the words of magic as she swept her had across the cover. The words on the cover glowed briefly then faded to their normal gold color. Opening the book she made herself comfortable at the small table. Having bribed the barmaid she was confident she would be alerted should any of the party leave. She couldn't have the wench knowing which one she was following, it would leave to much of a trail and she wanted no one picking up on her magic. Although obviously a mage, the random use of any magic could bring with it unwanted attention.
Arrow was surprised, and for once in her life, at a loss for words. She had heard about the destruction of kendermore that had occured recently, but the gravity of the situation had not fully sunken in. This poor kender was the perfect image and reflection of some person's lust for power, some fool who had thought he could gain that power by leaving hundreds of innocents homeless and scarred for life.
Arrow smiled, unable to help herself. Why did she care? It was not her business what people decided to do with their lives, or to the lives of others. "Who did you kill?" she asked calmly.

"There... there were soldiers to make sure that no-one escaped when the dragon..."she drew a deep, shuddering breath "... I killed some of them. Had to... had to get away... And then I killed... I killed my brother. He was hurt, he would never walk again, would probably bleed to death... He... asked me to. Begged me." She clenched her fists. "I carried him all the way out from there, just because I did not want him to be one of those nameless corpses that everyone would mourn but no-one remember. And everytime I killed one of those those soldiers, I enjoyed it.... I enjoyed it..."
Arrow leaned forward and placed a pale hand on the kender's shoulder, her expression softening.
"That's nothing to be ashamed or frightened of. They deserved what you gave them. And no one can blame you for fullfilling your brother's wishes." She smiled knowingly and sat back again, 'Sometimes the most detestable things in life give us the greatest pleasure.'
Arrow sighed, thinking back on her own shadowy past. There had been a lot of death in it, most of which she had caused...not directly, but by guiding the hands of others. The Trickster could not decide which form of murder was more appealing...or wrong.

"My brother was one thing" Amaryll said in a low, serious voice. "But I wonder now at the right I gave myself, the right to take something from another that..." she shook her head. "There is just more pain in the world now because of me. Somewhere, someone is mourning them. Perhaps it would've been better for me to die."
'Well you didn't, did you?" Arrow pointed out gently, lacing her fingers and resting her chin on her hands. "My guess is that somewhere, someone has a reason for you to be alive. Probabaly the same reason all of us," she gestured to those at their table, "are here right now."

"Maybe so. I'd like to meet that Someone and have a little chat." suddenly, there was a sparkle of something in the bright blueness of her eyes. "Or a very long chat. And you" she added, almost as if she was speaking to herself, but still clearly referring to the trickster "aren't really what you suppose yourself to be. Or maybe, what you set out to be. But then again, few are."
Arrow raised an eyebrow, letting the kender see her confusion. 'What do you mean?" she asked, feeling she had a good idea of the answer; but wanting clarity. The Trickster hated being left in the dark, especially when she herself was being reffered to.

"Exactly what I said. You want to think one thing, but at the same time, you let yourself run away with you. Everybody plays at charades all the time. And even if we should let go of our masks, how could we tell who's who..." she absent-mindedly brushed out a stray whisp of auburn hair from her face, and grinned slightly. "Do no listen to me rambling. I confuse even yself, I believe..."
'Yes..?' Arrow urged her on, still a little overwhelmed by what the kender had said. The Trickster had never actually stopped to think about herself like that, and her companion's theory of every-one wearing masks intrigued her. If it were true, Arrow sighed, she was probably in possesion of quite a lot of masks.

Amaryll blushed a bit from Arrow's rapt attention. "Everyone has a person that they believe temselves to be, or want themselves to be. And a lot of persons that they want others to see in them. But at the same time, most people usually think on impulse, sometimes ruining this image, at least to themselves. And how do we know other people? From what they let show, or from what they hide?" her eyes had by now gotten an absent quality. "I think there's a famous saying about that. 'Not by your face, but by your mask, shall I recognize you.'"
'I have heard that before..." Arrow admitted, catching herself before her thoughts drifted too far away from the present. She smiled at Amaryll, "I have never met anyone of your race that has been so insightful. It is indeed a rare quality. Sometimes people tend to see things only as how they seem, not how they are."

Sighing Natasha closed the spell book she was reading. What was she doing here really?
Angry she paced the room. "why do I even bother! The spells will soon be of no use to me or anyone else for that matter!" Picking up the book she threw it onto the bed. "what are they going to do to me if I refuse this task of theirs?" The mood swings had become all to common. One min. she was floating through the clouds, dreaming of what could come should she find the magic again, if she can find what they ask of her and IF it works. The next min., depression over takes her and she lost in darkness without the magic to guide her, without hope and with little care than to end her mundane existance. This time she would have to decide what she wanted to do and quickly. If she was to refuse the task she would have to do so before the night was over. Packing the spell book away (not that anyone would actually want to take it at this point) she left her room and went back down stairs a frustrated look on her face, detesting that she even still wore the red robes. Taking a seat a few stools away from the Kender she ordered a pint and watched the rain, while listening to their conversation. Something had to help her decide and this is where she would start.

"I had this insight even before I... changed." Amaryll said, looking thoughtful. "I do think most of my race does. We just don't think about it, since there is nothing to do about it. That is their folly, and once was mine, but it was a folly created from wisdom. Now that I can no longer... keep that light in me, I am floundering in the dark." She shrugged, shuddered, as if the room had just became colder. "There is ill intents afoot..." she mumbled to herself.
'Hmm...' Arrow said thoughtfully. 'So you have noticed that as well?' the Trickster frowned, playing with one of the many pendants she wore. This one was silver and in the shape of a crow. Tugging at the leather cord it hung on Arrow sighed. "There are indeed ill things at hand; things most people seem not to notice." she added saddly. Her gaze lingered on the kender a moment longer as she smiled slightly, a note of sarcasm in her smooth voice.
'What are we, who are mere pawns in this cruel game of life, going to do about it?"

This poor sad creature! Natasha's mind was then made up. Turning toward the kender she slid over a few stools. "I know it is rude of me, but I overheard your conversation. There are things that can be done and I would like to help you. I know what you are thinking, why should I like to help out a kender. I say why not? I have no cause of my own now and I have given up on finding the magic once more. Now, I seek only revenge and to rebuild what we can of what has been lost. Starting with Kender will work for me if you would like the help? She smiled down at the depressed kender. I am Natasha. As you can see I was once a red rob, now I am lost under the one moon. Do you have any family at all that survived? If so, I will help you in anyway I can to find them. "

Amaryll smiled at the woman, but there was a certain catch in her voice as she spoke. "I have no idea where most of my family are. They might've been in Kendermore, they might've been traveling. I don't see how I could ever find them. They seem just as lost to e as my brother. But I do believe some of your feelings mirror my own." " It will take more than a Kender and a washed up mage to deal with this enemy, but it is a start. " For a long time she felt excitement again and you could see it in her eyes. "We can not start this with from the random goal of 'revenge' in mind. We must set a goal, accomplish that, little as it may be, and then move onto the next and the next. We must have some logic and method to our quest." Sliding closer she whispered in the kenders ear "it is not safe to talk of revenge in public my new friend. I have a room up stairs for the rest of the night. If you would like, yourself and your friend may join me to discuss the matter futher. I assure you that I have no ill intent." rocking back on her stool she grinned as if she had just told the kender a fine joke, just incase eyes had been watching. "I feel as I have met a fine new friend. Would you both like to join me in my room for a game of dice and a round of ale or mead, as you choose, on me?"
'Wine would serve me better.' Arrow replied, not quite sure what she made of this mage. The woman seemed harmless enough; but as Arrow often enjoyed proving to others...apearances could be decieving.
'We would be glad to join you, wouldn't we?" she added, looking at the kender. The Trickster smiled mischeviously and changed the color of her eyes to match that of their new companion's.
'I would't be too quick to stiffle thoughts of revenge.' she advised, letting her pendant fall back against her neck. 'Sometimes the inner fire that comes from feelings like that is all that can keep you going.'

The barmaid brought them their drinks and putting the steel on the bar Natasha got up and started to head toward her room. Taking a seat at the small table she gestured to the other to do the same. "I have no intention of putting out the flame of revenge. But there are those who would pass our names about for just one steel if they thought we may be out for it. Pardon me but I don't think I have even introduced myself. I am Natasha" she lifted her glass in greeting then put it to her lips for a sip of the sweet honey wine. "If we are to follow through with this we need to discuss a plan." She looked at the two as if wanting ideas of where to start. She knew very well what she thought they should do first but she needed to know more about them, mostly the woman, before she went on. One can always learn more by keeping ones ears open while ones mouth stays shut.
'No doubt you have one,' Arrow prompted, sitting down at the table Natasha indicated. 'But if you wish an idea then here is one of mine. One of the least reckless." she added under her breath in amusement. The Trickster hardly ever considered her own schemes to be 'reckless'.
'If it is information concerning this mysterious evil you seek, then Palanthas would be the obvious place to journey first. We could speak to Astinus, if you wish.'

Amaryll wondered silently what they meant by the 'flame' of revenge. There was no flame, just an echoing, chilly blackness that she desperatly needed to fill with something, anything. That was what her lust for revenge was. Cold.
As Arrow mentioned Planathas, she smiled, hiding a sudden and unwanted surge of bitterness behind it. "They wouldn't let me in" she pointed out evenly.

"If we do infact travel to Palanthas, and IF we actually reach it alive, would you be willing to risk youf life at that point on a now not so realiable magic?" " I don't know if I have the means to get both of you in at the same time, but one at a time I can do. Would you wear a ring of invisiblity? Knowing it may fail you?"
'You misunderstand,' Arrow sighed, waving a hand dissmisivley. 'I am perfectly capable of getting into places I am not supposed to be in, it's become more of a hobby really.' she added with a playfull smile. 'There's no need to waste your magic on me.'

Arrow shut the door to the mage's room carefully behind her, pocketing the key she had stolen. That was ok, she didn't really need trust. After all, the kender was a bit crazy. A more pressing matter was time. She had to get out of this Inn and soon. Morning could not come fast enough. Eventually they would catch up with her and want to know why she didn't complete her task. It was likely that they would kill her if they caught her.
She sat down on her bed and pulled out the book of spells she had been working on early in the evening. She could not take this with her. It was big, heavy and useless. She opened the book and grabbing hold of the first page, closed her eyes and pulled. The page did rip out of its binding. She sighed and using all the power she had left made a small flame in her hand just enough to light the page on fire. She had to know if it would burn.
Instantly the page took to the fire. She let it fall to the floor and then put it out with her boot. She would get up before dawn and place it in the fire in the common room. Closing the book she placed it under her pillow, her head went on top of that and attempted to get some rest.

Damar waited patiently for the red-robe. Time was not a problem for him, He had lived for four centuries and he could wait another hour if he needed to. This was going to be a boring mission, one that took little effort Damar thought. The city of Solanthus had hired him to bring this red-robe back to them, alive, and unhurt. So he would follow orders, but if she caused trouble he didn't know how well he could follow the second part of that order. About an hour later he heard the door of the inn swing open on squeaky hinges...
Arrow did not bother to return to her room. She was hardly tired, and the prospect of starting out on their journey the following day had filled her with excitement that she was barely keeping in check.
She meandered through the main foyer of the inn, watching the various guests who were seated at the surrounding tables and making note of who looked to be the most simple-minded. Always a good thing to know when one was in need of money.
After releiving several drunken humans of their money pouches and other objects that had captured her interest, Arrow pushed the inn door open, wanting a bit of fresh air.

Amaryll climbed out a window and swinged up on the roof. She knew there was usually a space between it and the ceiling that was used as a sort of isolation in old buildings like this one, and sure enough, she soon managed to find a crack to squeeze herself into. The air was damp but warm in the small space, and she would be able to get a few hours of sleep.
Marked.
She would never been able to bear with the pity that she would've met in the red-robe's eyes as soon as she had to let go of her heavy travelling-clothes.
Branded.
All over her, snaking like a mark of her pain and shame and guilt at not being able to do more, like a mocking of who she had been.
Trapped.
She sometimes wondered if she was mad. If she was really untouched and this was just a halluciantion come out of her mind, which never seemed to be able to leave the terror behind.
Fouled.
But then she remembered the hands, the laughs, the pain, the vivid, loud and tearing memory that was etched into her very soul, and she knew it didn't matter. To her, it would always be real.
Scarred.
It would never let her go.

Natasha lay awake in bed, she could not sleep with the massive book under her head. Sighing and looking annoyed she got out of bed and silently, book in hand made it to the common room. She would just have to do this now, no reason to put it off. Making her way to the fire she sat by it for a few min. gazing into with a lost look. She inched her way closer and swiftly pulled the book from under the robe and threw it deep into the fire. Picking up the steel tending rod she made sure it was well covered over, no hand would be able to grasp it out to the blaze. She watched it. She wanted to see it burn, to be done with it's magic, or the hope of it. Just as in the test the book did burn, proving there was no magic left in it. Standing she slid her hand back into her sleves and quietly made her way back up the her room. Glancing out the window she noted the time and saw the traveling companion on the road. "none of my concern so long as she will be awake enough to travel" Only an hour and she would need to be on the road.

Damar waited patiently for the troop. Somewhere in the wee hours of morning the door opened and out walked a dark form. Damar was on alert, even though he could see that the figure could not recognize him. He also noted that it was not the person he was searching for. Tired and anxious, he decided to enter the inn. As he pulled his hood farther up on his face he drifted noiselessly into the inn, just in time to glance the hem of a red robe disappearing around the corner. He smiled to himself and looked around to make sure the innkeeper wasn't already awake. He silently followed the footsetps up to the door and stood by it for a minute. He then proceeded to slip his lockpick out of his belt and slide it into the door. He fiddled with it for a minute, and then the he slowly let the lock come undone. As he cracked open the door, he noiselessly made his way to the figure looking out the window. He slid his dagger out of his belt....
