View Full Version : House of Dead (planning)

This is a thread about a haunted mansion. (I know, I must be a creative genius for coming up with something this original).
Anyway, the story goes like this.
A priest of Habbakuk, is summoned to a mansion far away from his temple. He meets a man that somehow has a connection with Habbakuk.
The priest is asked to form a group and clear the mansion of all its undead spirits. The catch is, no one will be payed, and the adventurers will have to be experienced.
Any class except Necromancers or dead creating classes. Necromancers in this thread is like conjuring tasteless bread in a master chef's bakery.
Although, classes that specialize in ghost extermination, *cough*Ghostclerics! (I hope you get the reference), will have some use. Fighters and physical fighting classes will have plenty to fight too.
Any race is allowed that is Medium sized or smaller. No minotaurs or centaurs and taller, please. Many places in the mansion will be tight spaces making blockades for larger creatures. However, this makes being a kender or gnome a plus ;) .
No dragons, half-dragons, half-demons, half-gods, gods, etc...
I need everyone to have stats for Str, Dex, Con, Int, Wis, Cha, and HP for their characters. There won't be any real D&D rules in this, but I need stats for story purposes (you'll see). If you don't have dice, or don't know how, let me know and I can help/do it for ya.
Levels are 12-16.
I'm looking for 3-6 players.
Time period will be 300 past Age of Mortals.
The mansion was built shortly before the War of the Lance. So its old, and filled with spook of different time periods. The mansion is mostly filled with human ghosts with a few exceptions.
Now, here's something fun... if you want to make a ghost to haunt. Go for it! Even if you aren't a player, feel free to make a spook. The more the creepier. However, I ask that the ghosts are just "extras". They can't affect the story, unless I decide otherwise :D . Your ghost can be just a noise, a shadow, a full blah-blah-blah apparition, or just eyes staring at the players. Feel free to haunt anywhere except Obad's Lounge and anywhere with a ??? (I'll have a map up; I hope).
If for some reason you need to quit the story, instead of just vanishing without a word, (if you like) you can either leave the mansion (and come back if you want) or kill off your char and make a new one if you ever decide you want back in.
If you ever feel like you don't care for your character and would like to try a new one, you can kill or evacuate your old character and make a new one if you wish.
Just so long as there isn't a new char every day...
Also, if you know you'll be gone for a while, you can have your character "abducted" if you want, and "miraculously returns" when you can come back in. Or whatever you feel like doing.
I'm probably too laid back here, but so long as the story can go on, I'm gonna go ahead and say I'm perfectly leveled laid back.
Also, if at any point in the story you want in, pm me and so long as the story isn't solved or there aren't already too many people, I'm sure you can join.
Tired of reading? Sorry. There's more coming in the next post. I went through the fun of making a map of the mansion grounds, its first floor, and second floor. (I just hope they show up well enough, if at all).

More plot:
The priest of Habbakuk arrives at the mansion described to him by his God.
Outside the front gates awaits a large man in a long blue trench coat.
He seems to be aged, yet full of life. The man had a large bushy beard.
The priest was convinced this man was a sailor. Perhaps a captain.
"You must be Obad. My message mentioned you."
"Aye, yuh be just what I need. Come lad, let's 'ed to the town. We can discuss our business in a tavern."
Obad clapped the smaller priest on the back, nearly sending the cleric off of his feat.
The priest was very curious about why he had been sent by Habbakuk to help a sea captain with a mansion that was no where near an ocean.
"So, Davin, yuh think yer ready for that mansion? There be some strange things in thair."
The priest of Habbakuk, Davin, listened to Captain Obad, slightly irritated.
Davin was one of the more experienced priests at the temple.
Though there was much more for him to learn, he wasn't some young adventurer. He had left the temple on a special errand for Habbakuk.
As soon as this was taken care of, he'd head straight home.
"Yes, sir. I assure you I am qualified.
Now, let me go over this.
You want me and whatever group I can get, to enter YOUR mansion?"
"Right, ye see, lad. Me mansion be inhabited by the dead. Now, normally, I haven't any trouble with em.
But fer some reason, them spooks won't let me in no more. Nothing I do can get me on them grounds.
I need someone not associated with the mansion to enter it.
That would be you, lad."
"What do you expect me to do about this? Am I to exorcise these spirits?"
"You do whatever it takes teh get them to settle down. Some are former owners. Perhaps they want something? I don't know.
I can't get in there to help them no more. Do whatever ya can."
"But you're not going to pay anyone I find to help?"
"I ain't looking fer much. Just someone to let me into me home. Surely there be some kind folk willing to help?...
Nevermind, listen, bribe them, challenge them, tug at their strings, I don't care.
Habbakuk wants yeh to do this fer me, so I don't care how yah do it so long as it gets done."
Maps!:

http://i206.photobucket.com/albums/bb312/niynde/VMFirstFloor.jpg
http://i206.photobucket.com/albums/bb312/niynde/VMSecondFloor9_28.jpg
Vecna Mansion is the name of the building. Like I said, Obad's Lounge and any ??? are ghost free. They can NOT enter those areas. The exception is the ??? (Screaming) room. That one's special. No player can access that room. Just going near that room results in a -10 level penalty and energy loss. (If you don't have 10 levels and you go near the door... you die!!!! (note the 12-16 level range; its late and I'm very tire. my body is burning all the sugar in me causing me to be slightly insane.)
Also at this point in the game, all ??? rooms are locked and unaccessible. But make sure the characters return regularly to see if they have found what they needed.
The letter's show where stairs or passages lead to.
'A' goes to 'A', 'B' to 'B', etc...
However, 'A' is locked (and no, kender tools can't unlock it; might have to find a hidden item maybe?)
'B', 'C', and 'D' are spiral staircases.
If you were wondering why the story is 300 years since Age of Mortals, well, the freezer really acts like a walk in freezer of modern times and the bathroom and kitchen have running water. (I say a mix of better technology and magic are good ways of having fridges in a fantasy world). There are still no guns, however there are some special items that can be used.
Now, certain story related ghosts come out at specific times. So I'll be showing what time it would be. I'm going by 11:00, 12:00, 1:00. I don't know Krynn time (if it is different?) so I'm just going by what I know. Also, watch for where ghosts tend to show up most often at what time.
I've put a lot of time and energy into this, so I hope to get a few players.
And quite honestly, I'm hoping to have one char (not my own) getting chased by a ghost.
That is my goal as a TM. And a screaming character is always good too.

For story purposes, I'm playing two characters (besides the dead ones).
Please give the basic info on your character profiles.
If you have a spellcaster, you don't have to list spells, but I like to, just to help me keep track.
Remember, the characters have high levels. At 4th, 8th, 12th, and 16th levels, the characters gain +1 on a stat (cept health). That's why my chars might seem high. (plus good rolls)

O.o Ooooooo!! Maps! Very nice, I like maps. :D
Can I join? I'm a bit rusty on combat rolls, but I can learn. Plenty of free time I have. Can I? Please? *hop* :D

Yay! My maps worked. By the way, I know I said no half-dragons, but to me, draconians and half-dragons are different. If anyone wants to play a draconian, thats fine too.
Howdy, Nilstria! I'm not actually making combat rolls necessary. The stats are just to show how certain ghosts can affect environments. Some give temporary HP, some drain HP, that sort of thing.

Greetings! :D *wave*
That's a good thing, because to date I've never been able to do a combat roll correctly. Just ask Pyro. ^-^
Can I be a female human fighter 10/mage 4? I wanted a couple spells. I have complete stats completed, just need to finish the biography and personality, that's the hard part. ;) Do you desire someone of a specific temperment? I think Alandia would die quite quickly upon entering your haunted mansion. (Aren't you original? :D)
Also, don't you think there would be at least one lantern at each entrance? You have ten at the front door, but none at the side or back. And why is there a maze in the front door? ^-^

You criticizing my maps? I might be offended! I'm not sure yet though, I'll have to get back with ya. Anyway, you'll see that those "lanterns" aren't something you'll find in a regular store.
The maze was for fun.
Feel free to play what you like.

Description: Ishaka is short and perfectly proportioned, with lean muscle and long legs that can propel her faster then most championship sprinters. Her hair is a fiery auburn with streaks of gold. It falls to her hips and she likes to keep it loose. Ishaka’s eyes are a deep sapphire blue and her looks can be deadly, like smoking ice. Her skin is pale, though she spends hours on end outside, without nary a blemish except for battle scars of course. Her endurance and skill with her sword is remarkable.
Personality: A warm, inviting woman Ishaka is not. Her character is as cold as her eyes. She speaks little, and when she does it is usually a biting remark or some sarcastic statement intended to insult while informing the recipient of something they should have been smart enough to find on their own. She has no friends that anyone can think of, and few people know her much at all anyway. Her coldness does not invite conversation.
Gear: Dagger, gauntlet, longsword, studded leather armor; blanket, flint and steel, hooded lantern, two pouches, weeks worth of rations, healer kit, silver holy symbol, spell component pouch, spell book, thief’s tools; equaling to 47 pounds.
Biography: Ishaka grew up much sooner then most children. At five years of age, her family was murdered in a blaze of fire. That happened during the War of the Lance, and her village was one of the first to be obliterated by the dragon hordes. The memory of her mother being snatched up, screaming, by a green dragon was one of the most horrific thing she had ever seen. To this day, Ishaka can remember everything, from her mother’s strangled scream of death, to the flash of pleasure in the dragon’s red eyes. The girl, just five years old, swore on that day, as she fled from the carnage, that she would kill any dragon that she could find, black, green, red, blue, white, or not.
For some days Ishaka ran, drinking from streams and eating the berries that were beginning to ripen. Eventually she came upon a cabin in a secluded place. Instinctively suspicious, as the girl had swiftly developed a distrust and guile unheard of for one so young, Ishaka walked in the shadows until she just a few yards from the cabin’s small porch.
Then a couple came out of the modest dwelling. They were laughing, their eyes bright. Ishaka suddenly remembered how often her own parents used to laugh like that. Tears dripped down her face. The man heard her sobs and found her at the base of a tree, curled up in a miserable little ball. Smiling with infinite gentleness, the man brought her into the cabin. So began Ishaka’s years living with Parsan and Sama, the man’s wife.
Ishaka spoke little for some years; her thoughts jealously kept to herself and not letting anyone intrude on the carefully kept sanctuary in her mind. Parsan and Sama didn’t seem to mind, and treated her with the same amount of love that they would have shown their own child, should they ever have one.
When Ishaka reached her teenage years, she asked Parsan to teach her how to use the long sword that hung above the small fireplace. Parsan had stared at her for a moment, the smiled in that way he smiled, and consented. The sword had been his father’s, made of fine steel. The hilt would need to be replaced, but otherwise the sword was in fine condition. Parsan rewrapped the hilt, polished the metal and blade, and then made two wooden swords for them to practice with. Within two months, Ishaka’s skill far exceeded his own. She could use the long sword with such finesse that you’d think she could be a sword master.
Once that time came, Ishaka made up a pack of provisions, buckled the scabbard on her belt, left the couple a note, and left the cabin. She never returned.
From that time forward, Ishaka worked as a mercenary to almost anyone who was fighting against the Dragon Armies. She joined a few private armies and soon proved that she had more skill with a blade then almost every single man she came across, generals, and kings included. Her name spread among the mercenaries and higher-ranking people wished to hire her. Since she knew there was no point, Ishaka declined.
Once, when she was in Haven, a black-robed mage had walked into the tavern. Immediately he looked at her, his eyes under his hood wide. He walked over to her, ignoring the fact that her hand was on her dagger hilt. The mage said that he had felt her power from all the way across the room. Her magic.
Ishaka was shocked, no pun intended. She knew she was unnaturally good with a blade, but she had never thought she had magic. The mage, called Sethous, began to explain. Her magic was raw and unused, but her potential to become a skilled mage was great. Sethous said that he could teach her to use her magic, to make it work for her instead of just being there doing nothing.
Nilstria Archmagus
09-14-2007, 06:14 PM
He proposed that she go with him to the Tower of High Sorcery.
Like everyone else, Ishaka had heard rumors of the Tower, of the magical Forest of Wayrenth that was it’s protector. But she was never one to back out from something new. She agreed. Sethous took her hand and teleported her to the Tower along the roads of magic.
In her stay at the Tower, Ishaka was forced to stop training with her sword, as Sethous said that mages were not allowed to have any other blade but a silver dagger. She had agreed with great reluctance and irritation.
After that, her schooling went fast. She spent hours reading in the Great Library, learning things she had never known about or understood. Her view of the world widened, though her cold outlook on it was the same. She still sought to kill the dragons. The only reason she was learning magic was to better equip herself to fulfill that goal.
Ishaka took her Test when Sethous deemed she was ready, at around the age of twenty-six. She passed easily and donned the black robes. The Head of the Order, Par-Salian, let her be apprenticed to Sethous. Ishaka learned quickly.
In her entire time living at the Tower, Ishaka never went beyond its walls. There really was no need. There was nothing that the Tower did not provide.
Rumors circulated whether she and Sethous were lovers. Upon overhearing one of those pronouncements, Sethous wondered why he had never tried to be Ishaka’s lover. It seemed like a completely logical byproduct of their companionship. Within a couple days of wondering, he found himself in her bed, with an ardent Ishaka he never thought existed. The rumors were proven correct.
Their love affair was ended dramatically when Sethous ended up killing himself in a freak experiment. His charred body was removed from the laboratory by solemn mages who buried him within hours of his untimely death.
Upon hearing that her lover was dead, Ishaka stripped off her black robes, buckled on her leather armor and long sword, and left the Tower. Rarely did she return. Ishaka returned to her life as a well-known mercenary or assassin. Her skills were even more sought after because she was able to use a few tricks to give her and any of her allies special advantages.
At age 37, Ishaka killed her first dragon, a blue. It wasn’t a green, but it was still a dragon. She felt good after that, like her life had true meaning.
That was when something very odd happened. There she was, standing triumphantly over the smoking head of the blue dragon, then she wasn't there anymore. Ishaka was in a dark place, cold, utterly void, with less mind stimulation then the Abyss. Her ears rung like she was standing right next to a ringing temple bell; her flesh felt like it was being torn from her bones. The woman opened her mouth to scream, but no sound came out. Ishaka fell into oblivion.
Then she was flying to her feet, gasping in fright, blue eyes wide. She was drenched and shivering. Before her stood a man holding a dripping bucket. There was snow falling lightly on his shoulders. He looked at her with emotionless eyes, eyes the color of the ocean after a storm. Ishaka watched, unmoving, as the man put down the bucket and swiftly tossed her a fur blanket. She caught it with startling swiftness and was momentarily pleased at seeing the man's surprised look.
The man handed her a bowl of tasteless stew and introduced himself. His name was Carth Anadi, and as she probably noticed, it was winter.
Ishaka was not having a good day. After Carth had finished introducing himself, and she had returned the pleasantry, they were attacked by a minotaur.
The minotaur immediately had Ishaka's sword in his gut. Carth's face was the picture of stupified amazement. As for the minotaur, well, he was dead, not much more to say. Neither the minotaur nor Carth had even seen Ishaka move.
Ishaka warmed Carth's bed that night. After their night of pleasure, when morning came, Ishaka rose and left before Carth had even woken up. She covered her tracks with such expertise that even the great Elven ranger would not be able to discern where she went.
Ishaka had no idea where she was, and was bewildered since it was spring when she killed the dragon. When was she? Ishaka shrugged and continued walking. She traveled for ten more years, reestablishing herself as one of the best mercenaries or assassins this side of Ansalon. And if you were wondering, no. She didn't meet Carth again, but he was quite irritated when he found that she had left. ^-^

LOL. She'll be missed if/when she leaves (by me, maybe not the characters).
Just as a personal request, would you guys mind just filling me in where your characters are going? I need to know when to pop a spook on you. :D

*gives Nickarama a big kiss on the cheek* I have such a good boy. LOL!
Now I don't have to edit. I can finish my sandwich and go hit the sack, seeing I have to get up at 5:30 in the morning. :D
Oh...ummmm...this is more to those of you who haven't played with me before, I'm not usually online on the weekends. I manage to get on for a bit at night but quite often I am too tired and don't have enough time to post, so I would appreciate it if y'all could drag my characters along.
And Nickarama, I will talk SS to see if he will let me work his ghost in the tavern. LOL!
Y'all have a goodnight. And if I don't see y'all, have a good weekend.
niwawa

Nil - Call me what you like, providing its not bad, because then I would have to hunt you down and disembowel you. ;)
Nickarama - I feel sorry for anyone who plays with my characters. *smiles evilly*

Thanks, SC. I'm not sure what you're planning on doing to Audrey, but if its at night, I think I can guarantee you, that it'll be a very interesting night for everyone alive.
For everyone, be sure to have your characters use their senses. Here's a hint, you might hear, see, or smell a ghost. Feel free to detect ghosts. I won't always give them to you, you know.

I am planning on 86ing her. :p Thus the reason I didn't stat her.
Anyone want to try and rid the party of her feel free. Please note the word "try", it can be difficult to take out a moving target, i.e. someone running. LOL!

Running AND screaming I hope. That's my personal goal after all. :D
I knew you'd knock her off, but I'm not sure how it will happen. But from what's happened already, I won't be surprised to see a "hunt" between the players.
Considering it's no where close to being noon, and the group has already blown up a door, had a tumble down the stairs (which I was hoping someone to get hurt), and had a "fight".
Isn't it amazing how you expect a thread to flow a certain way, then the players go and just make everything so much more... unexpected?

I've never been a DM in a DnD game. Actually, I've never played a true game of DnD before. I know most the rules, but just haven't had the opportunity.
I'm enjoying the thread, just hoping you don't overlook anything or try something your not supposed to.
