This is an RP Guide of sorts for Apprentices of Magic. Please read before posting as a mage.
These aren't rules, they're just preferences, so feel free to ignore them.
Firstly RPing mages is different on forums than in D&D. You don't roll fortitude to see if you've exhausted the magic, and you don't roll for spell failure, and usually aren't told on wether not you can use a spell by the thread maker like you are by DM and limited spells per day in D&D. All this you do at your discretion.
Robes of the Orders. Alignment decides your loyatly to whichever robe, so if you choose a black robe be sure that you're evil, not just wanting to be cool and then help a damsel in distress without asking for a reward. You'll notice when Raistlin helps the companions while in Black Robes it's to finish off his depts to them, not to save them for himself, nor does he let Bertrem through out of the goodness of his heart.
Once a robe of an order you must choose 2-3 out of 4 specific schools of the other orders to bar yourself from and specialize in one of your order's schools.
White Robes of Good - Abjuration and Divination
Red Robes of Neutrality - Illusion and Transmutation
Black Robes of Evil - Enchantment and Necromancy
Here is a Spell List (http://www.systemreferencedocuments.org/35/sovelior_sage/wizardSpells.html) of the newest D&D version.
Components aren't needed all the time as they're can be just in the mind, thought they do help focus concentration for spells so are better if used when possible. It also adds an expect to your RPing which evens you out with the warriors of the story and will allow you much more to write about. Might wonna try thinking about how rare some of these items are as well, and going to the mage-ware shop to buy'em. And think about how much time it takes to take out the components, use them, say your owns, move your hands, and cast your spell.
Test item. Just remember that although every mage gets a magical items for passing the test, you don't know it's abilities at first and not everyone will receive an all powerful Staff of Magius.
Example of boring mage to funner mage.
Example 1: Digofein was just shot in the leg with an arrow, he ignored it and cast a lightning bolt at the enemy.
Example 2: Digofein felt the arrow piercing his thigh, clenching his teeth in pain he struggled not to stumble. He had a job to do and damnit he was going to do it, poeple were depending on it. As the archer went to string his other bow Digofein fought through the pain dicking into his pouch while placing his other hand inside his robe and grabbing the glass rod as he pulls out some fur from his components pouch. Collapsing from the pain to one pain he that time was running short the arrow was being set and putting the pain in the back of his mind he set to work. Rubbing the fur to the glas rob he began to chant the words and digging deep into himself he began to feel the warm, the pulsating magic that was his very being, summoning it from his body and into his fingers, into the rod he pointed it at the archer and saying the last words caused a lightning bolt to emerge and strike the man in the chest sending spark flying and skin burning as he falls backwards through the air to land dead on the ground. The combination of pain, magic and bloodloss appear to be too much for'em as he collapses to the ground.
Feel free to use this thread as your 'Spellbook' to link to when posting your mage in threads.
P.S. Try not to make Raistlin copies. And another thing is when there's already a mage, do not poste in being one too unless there's enough players to even out the other classes or permission from the thread owner.
[Edit] Did I miss anything? PM me your comments and ideas, try and keep the posts for your characters' spellbooks and don't double post or I'll haver your balls, and if you don't have any, I'll strap them on ya so you can feel me tearing them off. :p
