OOC: OK folks, here it is. The promised newbie adventure, the very first one on these boards I might add, courtesy of moi. I'd like to at least start it off, seeing as I won't be around a computer for the next week or so.

Plot

The setting is, of couse, after the War of Souls. The gods have returned to Krynn, and the dragon overlords are slowly losing their grip on the free people of Ansalon. The small town of Elderwood, situated somewhere north of Solace and bordering close to the Darken Wood, is a town that was ravaged by the passing of the Chaos War, followed by the minions of Beryl and even more recently the struggles of the War of Souls.

With the help of the small population of surviving villagers, they worked hard in re-establishing the once prosperous trade center. House and inns were rebuilt, crops re-sown, and the lives of the villagers were slowly returning back to normal. With the ushering of a new age comes the return of clerical and high sorcery magic, as well as endless possibilities for a bright new future. What will the villagers and travellers do next? That's up to you to decide...

Characters

Basically, it's a newbie adventure, a place for new or developping characters. Try not to make them too powerful (aka godmoding), no Mary-Sue's or Gary-Stu's, and no made-up or modified races. In fact, try to stick with a basic humanoid race; that includes humans, elves, ogres, kender, etc. Half-breeds are also accepted. What else? Keep your characters simple, don't have an overly deep background or storyline for them. Other than that, no requirements. Here's a basic character info sheet:

Name: Tom Tomson
Gender: Male/Female
Race: Human, Half-Elf, Kender, etc.
Class: Druid, Cleric, Sorcerer
Equipment: Staff, Knives, Short Sword, Lockpick
Affiliation: Good/Neutral/Evil
Bio: Tom was a little boy who grew up to become a...

OOC: That's all, so now someone can go ahead and start it off. The story will begin at an inn with a couple of villagers/travellers coming together and eventually becoming companions to start off on an adventure (very cliché, I know). Feel free to take advantage of the town, and use it to establish yourself (say, you were once the town baker, and you decided to take up a sword and go off on an adventure). Happy trails!

If you have any questions or concerns about this thread, e-mail me here (nuitarieclipse@hotmail.com).

Sothus cleaned the sweat from his sun-baked forehead, he had run quite a long time to reach this small town without being seen by his pursuers. I'll try to mix in the crowd here , he thought.

Looking around he noticed that most of the town had just been rebuild Not of my concern thought. But I need some inconspicuous place to spend the night.

He saw the farmers walking to the fields, he was so far from home but things were so alike. He had been one of these farmers, used the same tools, until he had to leave. But he was not sad. His village was filled up with only farmers and he had no future there. No, he'd have to find like-minded people and join together. Was this the right place? Until now he had been without luck... but he understood. He had time, he was still young.

He wandered about the town and bought some food, for sure he'd need traveller's rations, for probably he wouldn't be here for a long time. Asking about he was told abot the inn, so he went there. Is an inn the best place to be when you are on the run? he asked himself. Bah! Someday I'll have to end being afraid. Let's begin today!. So he went to the inn.
Sitting next to a windowless wall he asked for food and drink, and for a room for the night. He scanned the people there. Would anyone here accept me and what I have done? he wondered. Worst for them if not!

Some dropes of beer fell on his tattered trveler's clothes. I'll have to get new ones he thought as he cleaned the stain Now that I have money again He checked his backpack and held something tightly in his hand, hidden from view. That kender would steal it... I could not allow!

He leaned against the wall and kept eating, watching, waiting.

Kee-Kee sits alone in the corner of the inn, silently eating her food. She occasionally glances up, as though waiting for someone. Her clothes are worn, but well-made, and a sheathed sword leans against the wall beside her.

"Why isn't she here?" Kee-Kee mutters to herself.

The door swings slowly open and a short female figure slips in. Skiring the crowd, she makes her way over to Kee-Kee's table. Slipping into the seat opposite from Kee-Kee, she wisper in a low voice, "Sorry I'm late, but I meat the hottest, most hansome kender I've ever seen. I have an appointment at his house tonight." She sat back with a mysterious, sexy grin on her face  . She giggles in a girly manner and stuffs a potato off of Kee-Kee's plate into her big mouth. "You gotta see him!" She then pulls out one of her many, many pouches from around her thin waist and says, "I'm gonna go get some food or some coffee or somethin'. Want anything?"

"Listen to me and what i have to say," he says befor ethe man can open make a sound. "I'm Kashnik Thornhand. I saw you enter town. I know the look on your face. Your being chased. Listen, I can help you. The question is, do you want it?"
He looks the man in the face, not letting his gaze get away.

A young man sits at a small, otherwise empty table. His quarterstaff leans on the chair across from him, sturdy and iron-banded, but showing the nicks and burn marks of battle. The man himself if tall and large, but obviously untrained in battle...at least, battle involving conventional weapons. He looks casually around, seeing the kender approach the quiet man, but shakes his head. With a sigh, he rises and prepares to go out the door. As he walks toward it, he senses....something. He pauses, unsure of the source of the anomaly, and cautiously sits back down at his table. A few of the other patrons look at him askance, but he remains there, slowly and silently probing the room for whoever had broadcasted the magic he had sensed. His eyes close, and unseen mystical tendrils reach out, searching.

[OOC] Hey, I said "windoless" wall!!! I've been cheated! ;)
The man quickly closes the backpack, it seems like he wants to hide that something, as much as keeping it safe from the kender.
What help a kender could provide me! he says in a quite voice. In his younful face one can see certain disdain for the kender.
Maybe... the man thinks
Well, maybe you can be of assistance... there's someone that has confused me with someone else... I have been accused of being a cleric of Chemosh!

While the man speaks, whe puts his backpack (his only possession besides his walking stick) discretelly as far as possible from the kender.

I was in (OOC put a nearby village here, don't mind which, that isn't Solace) and some undead rose from the graveyard. And as I was the only foreigner who hadn't an alibi, guess who was blamed? And as I know a few minor mystic tricks, guess who they thought I am?

Rage begins to fill the young man...

As if I were a cleric of Chemosh I would do anything as obvious as that!

"He is a campanion of mine. Magi. I saw you enter town, and had him come in to see your prolems. He sent me your thoguhts. "
Kashnik looked at the man.

"Yes, I know what kind of trouble it is... I was raised in a village near Nightlund... but I decided to go and know the world. And I was taught about the old gods, not hat I had much faith in them... from now on, who knows..."

The man looks at the sorcere and asks the kender, still looking at him, his tone a bit angry and high enough for the spellcaster to hear, but not too high.

"And tell him stop probing my mind" You'd find surprises you may not like he clearly thinks.

He looks at the kender again.
"How I got into this?"
"You already know" the tone in his voice is quite... annoyed "So why bother asking? They have hunted me no matter how far I wen, or how fast I ran... I have had few sleep at night, few rest... and I don't want anyone getting into trouble because of me." his tone has become quite cutting... "so please, leave me, for your best."

HE suddenly stand up and goes up to his room... after checking that everything is in his backpack, of course...

Before he stpes on the first stair, the man looks at all the people gathered in the inn. Someday he thinks Someday Iwon't have to lie to ken... and suddenly stops thinking. His mind may be probed again, he won't risk. He turns again and tiredly climbs the stairs.

Chippy scuttles up to the bar. "Two hot chocolates, please," she says to the man standing there in her best innocent voice. The second he turned his back, she leaned over the counter and took all the money she could on one handful. He turned back around just as she finished stuffing her loot into her pouch. She smiled, out down the money she owed and meandered back to the table. She set the hot chocolate down and said to Kee-Kee, "I am going to give some hot chocolate to the dude that just went up the stairs. He seems like the kind of person who would like pink bunnies and lots of chocolate! I'm such a great person!" She waited for Kee-Kee's approval, but when it didn't come, she flew up the stairs and knocked on the young man's door...

The young man had just thrown himself into the bed.
Ahh... rest, at last
His mind was begginning to wander into past -recent and not so much recent- events of his life, mingling with the vivid imagination that comes with the state of pre-sleep.
Then suddenly knocking at the door wakes him up.
"What in the Abyss" he mutters. He jumps from the bed and inexpertedly grabs his walking stick as an impromptu weapon. He opens his backpack and hungs some medallion under his clothes, making sure it is well hidden. He pushes a chest behind the door, so it won't suddenly be completelly bursted open, and swings a bit the door, looking through the small peephole he has made.
"Can't a man sleep in here?" says, trying to make his voice sound natural.

" I know I left it around here somewhere. Aha here it is."

The Gnome puls out his device than can supposedly cange any liquid to any other liquid. It resembles a long series of tubes made out of some strange material, as well as a small clockwork machine in the center. He sticks one tube in the Ale he ordered and then prceeds to flip a switch on the clockwork mechanism. The mechanism begins to emit steam and thenlets loose some other foul substance.

"uh-oh"

The clockwork mechansm explodes in a shower of gears, some foul liquid and steam, and some ale as well. Showeing most everyone in the tavern.

The young man known as Anthalus snuck quietly toward Kashnik's room. The kender's note had been a simple message, stating only that he was to "keep up the script." While this fragment seemed innocent enough, it meant that he was to continue his mage-act. Kashnik had seen early on that the young man was troubled, and muttered for him to fall into an old role, that of mage. The two had been a team for several weeks now, seeking some hint of an adventure, he in search of artifacts, his friend on a quest for steel-however he might find it. In truth, he was a magic-user, but he wielded no wizardly spells. A mystic, his magics were those of healing and battle, meant to smite foes or restore allies. He had, however, sought out the glimmer of magic in the room, and had felt it resonate strongly within-or at least on the person of-Sothus. Discovering this, he had made a simple leap based not on mind-reading, but foreknowledge and intuition. News had come through one of Kashnik's many sources of an individual matching this description linked to the clergy of Chemosh. From there, it had been child's play to convince him that Anthalus was a though-probing mage, and thus gain his ear, if not his confidence.

Suspicions were high on his mind. Would he have to run once more? Wouldn't be rest in his life? But he didn't regret anything...

If at least it had been my fault! But I didn't raise them, I'm not so stupid! he thought.
There's someone after me, that's obvious. There's some nigromancer who wants me caught. How can I have already made these kind of enemies? I'm nothing but a newcomer to the Order... suddenly he stopede thinking. Maybe that mind-bender is here... quit thinking lke that!

He wants to have it handy if he has to flee. He removes the chest and sits on the bed, his hands on his face, rubbing his eye, yawning.

And when his visitor enters the room he looks straight at the eyes, his ones red due to tiredness and the rubbing.

As soon as the door clicked shut, Chippy sprang into action. She threw open the window and stelthaly climbed out onto the ledge. Carefully putting one of Kee-Kee's scrolls in the groove for the window, she slid it down. This would allow her to get back into the room, rather that cimbing through Sothus' window. She giggled at the thought of her climbing through his window during a serious conversation. She carefully slid along the ledge until she found Sothus' window. she clung to the window frame, trying to make out what they were saying.

Kee-Kee returns to the room, carrying her own mug full of hot chocolate. She notices a slight draft. She realizes that the window had been propped open with--

"AIEEEEEEEEEEE!!!!!!!!!!! MY SCROLL!" Kee-Kee screeches, grabbing the precious document.

To her relief, there's only a small crease in it. She makes sure the window is shut and locks it.

Kee-Kee glares at Chippy. "You're two hours late," she snaps. "What are you doing dating kender anyway? You're a human. Why did I get stuck with you for a sister?"

Chippy is a human who embarrasses Kee-Kee by being kender-like. Since Chippy is a human, that means that Kee-Kee, her older sister, is also human.

Hearing Kee-Kee cursing and making a big deal over a stupid piece of parchment, Chippy scrambled over to her window to see what was going on. Then it hit her: Kee-Kee had taken the scroll out from the window!!! Chippy cursed loudly and hurried over to the window. Sure enough, the scroll was gone and the window wouldn't budge. To make matters even worse, Kee-Kee had pulled the curtains shut so Chippy couldn't get Kee-Kee to open it back up. Figuring she would think of a way to get back in later, she scuttled back over to Sothus's window.

Anthalus retires to his own room, gathering his few belongings. As he prepares, his mind looks over the two humans' discussion. They'd mentioned artifacts, which in and of itself attracted his attention. He had an intense love of magic, seeking always to learn and develop new spells, and his mission for the past few months had been to seek out items imbued with magic's power, both to possess and study. Perhaps the women will be willing to tell me something?, he muses.

As Chippy shivers out on the ledge, she sees lights go out in Sothus' room. "Well, at least if he can go to sleep fast enough, I can climb through his window and go out his door.... but then my door is locked...." she mumbles to herself. "I am doomed," she declares. She waited for several more minutes. She gave up on waiting and crawled towards his window. She pressed her hands against the glass and pushed up. *click* The window slides up and crawls through. She was in luck. Sothus was in a horribly deep sleep, and for a moment, she wonders if he is dead. She didn't want to sick around and be at the scene. She tip-toes to the door and turns the handle. It won't budge. "Stupid Sothus," she wispers. She fumbles around in the dark, trying to find the latch that is securing the door shut. She finally found it and turns the handle. The knob twisted all the way around and the door slid noiselessly open. She slips out and shut the door behind her. She goes to her door and tries it. "Stupid Kee-Kee" she mumbeles. She had forgotten about Chippy, and had locked it up tighter that Sothus's. Probably trying to protect her dumb little scrolls." Daunted, she wandered over to Kashnik's door and knocks lightly....

As he nears the door, he sees one of them....Chippy, he thinks her name is. She is standing directly outside Kashnik's room, and he speaks quickly.

As he returns to his room, he hopes that Kashnik won't mind him going off with the two females for a while. Oh well, he thinks, he seems pretty involved with Sothus at the moment. We can always rejoin once I'm done with this.

Althoush, the depression the world had suffered had lessened a great deal since the return of the gods and the restoration of the various magics.

She has an unnatural ability to pick locks, but she knew these locks were designed to keep kenders out. Chippy waited and waited and finally she heard footsteps coming up the stairs. Chippy was exahusted and wanted nothing more than to flop down on the bed and go to sleep. "Just me. Though I'm never alone." Kashnik said this without an expression on his face. "I found what you asked. A grou that seeks adventure. And a cleric is among them. A cleric to you know which god I'm talking about."

Steam can also be seen emitting from it. He cranks a gear and the machine starts to hiss and boil the contents inside the glass globe. Soon it stops and a sickly odor emerges from the globe. The Gnome cracks it open by pulling tow levers and opening it. The odor becomes even more pronounced now. He looks in with delight and says.

"It has finally managed to make breakfast!"

The captured goblin looked around helplessly, and Anthalus held his staff tightly. He was not adept with weapons, but he'd been taught the basics of using one such as this; all he had to do was swing what was basically a large stick. If the thing tried to flee, he was prepared to strike it down. Glancing about, he asked "Anyone need healing?"

The goblin starts to stagger to its feet, but is shoved down by Kee-Kee. Shaking slightly, its head darts back and forth frantically, searching for escape and finding none. Giving in to the situation, it looks up and begins to speak.

"This, this place is ours. We live here, don't cause no trouble....others keep coming. She came, made us...hers. All listen-have to listen!-to her, do as she says. She says strangers come, kill strangers, and we...

The creature is clearly distressed, flinching every time he mentions this enigmatic "she." He seems honestly angry at her, but is too frightened to express it openly. He stops speaking, seeming to realize he's said too much. With a snarl, he crouches low, then leaps forward, a hidden knife siddenly in his hand.

Astonished by his friend's conjuring-or was it such?-Anthalus strode forward, summoning healing magic to his fingertips, probing the area for magical auras. Looking around, he searched for Kashnik. Magic such as that can be extremely dangerous, and he hadn't known the kender to be a mage, so the flames could be harmful. His divination should reveal the source of the explosion.

Kee-Kee lunges for the sword and scrambles to her feet. She takes another swing at the creature. The thing is injured by the attack as it jumps away from the gnome to avoid being decapitated. Kee-Kee drops her sword again. When it hit the creature, an icey jolt went down the blade and into her arm, temporarily making her swordarm useless...

The Gnome takes his small hammer out of his toolbelt he wears and tosses it at the creature with all his strength. It strikes the creature in the center of its being and the monster seems to dissapear.

When the creature vanishes, Kee-Kee starts to regain some feeling in her arm. She manages to pick up her sword and clumsily sheath it.

"This is a lot harder than I thought it would be," she comments.

He then begins searching again, this time more cautiously.

Placing his palms on the door, Anthalus gives a great heave. It moves smoothly, revealing a large room lit by two torches on each side wall. Small chests line the perimiter of the walls, framing large floor tiles that show shadowy glyphs and runes. Surveying the room, Anthalus spreads his fingers toward the floor and says, "Reveal." Again turning to his friends, he says, "The symbols glow with magic, but I don't know any spells that can tell what they do exactly. It may be dangerous to cross, but I believe those containers hold the artifacts we've been seeking. Any ideas?"

Holding it somewhat gingerly, he swings it in a shallow arc and lets it go. In utter silence it descends, the party holding their breath. The instant the stone touches the sigil-marked floor it scintillates and seems to flow into the tiles themselves, disappearing entirely in less than a second.

The Gnome pulls out a device with way too many steam engines on it than needed. It is also much smaller than most other Gnome inventions, which makes it an oddity. The Gnome sets it down on the ground, then pulls several cords on it and backs up. Everyones sight is suddenly filled with whilte light, aand then it died down. Once it is done, the traps appear to be gone, but the whole room seems to be gone as well. All that remains is quite literally white space.

The Gnome begins to fiddle with the device, leaving his companions staring at him dumbfounded.
